Backup (and FTP)

Having lost some work thanks to a disk failure, I am looking for a  
better backup solution.

I am trying Psync, which works fine in manual mode. Is there any way  
of bringing an external firewire disk back online at a particular  
time? or will Psync do this? the documentation is a little on the  
light side.

I also need an OS 9 (yes, sorry, and it's OT) FTP client for a friend  
who wants to dump stuff on my unix server to provide himself with a  
backup. He wants something free but if that does not exist I'll buy a  
program.
