I use smart mailboxes for almost all my reading. It usually only
takes about .75-1.5 seconds for a smart mailbox to display its
contents, although it can sometimes be much longer.

Regular mailboxes are generally speaking quite fast, unless they are
quite large, then the delay can be several seconds, or more.

My biggest issue with mail, and it's mostly solved with the smart
mailboxes, is that it doens't update the status of mailboxes if they
change while mail is open, assuming mail didn't change them. So if
new mail arrives in my IMAP mailbox "friends" mail.app will not see
it until I either disconnect/connect or synchronize the account. But
usually the smartmailbox will pick it up anyway. Usually.

Frankly, Mail.app is a crappy mail client in many ways. But over
all, it's better than any of the other's I've tried, and I've tried a
lot.
