Mail mboxes showing up empty

As a matter of fact, I've currently got two separate customers using
Mail.app who say they know new mail is on the server (they can see it
in webmail) but that Mail.app refuses to pick it up. The Activity
Viewer flashes quickly when they check mail, reports no errors, but
no new mail shows up. Meanwhile, I and lots of other users use
Mail.app against the same server with no issues (so I know it's not a
server config issue). That's not quite what you're describing below,
but seems like it might be related. These problems seem to have just
come up recently (since a recent Software Update?) Baffling.
