finding codec plugins for QT

My BIL is wondering why it's so difficult to determine which codec is  
needed when QT (on Mac or on Windows) can't play a file.
He says when he runs into a plugin issue with Mozilla's FireFox, he's  
directed to get the plugin and it installs without a restart -- just  
continues on his way.  However, in his experience with QT and codecs,  
he says he's directed to an Apple page with roughly 13 codecs to  
choose from, but has no idea what he needs.

Would it be difficult or impossible for QT to be more helpful? is it  
impossible for QT to know which codec you need and basically can do  
nothing but leave it up to the use ?
