"Missing" tracks

I had this happen when I was having network latency problems, but it  
cleared up (mostly) on its won once I took care of the underlying  
issue.  I think it does scan and startup.

However, i still ended up with about 2,000 tracks it simply could not  
find, and since I have everything sorted by smart playlists anyway, I  
dumped the library and started over.

In my experience, iTunes is somewhat fragile when it gets over 100GB  
of data...
