If you have the developer tools installed, try running Spin Control.  
It should detect Mail running wild and record some information about it.

Depending on how much you know about programming, it might help you  
deduce what's going on. If not, maybe you can post a small (very  
small) snippet of the output to the list. Often the functions are  
named something reasonable enough to tell you what might be happening.
