Dual OS X installs on same HD

and I would just switch between them using the StartUp Drive System 
Preferences Pane...Like when I used to for OS 9

hmm, I think that I am going to be off partitioning..

I want a test bed to test stuff out (maybe Panther after WWDC)

What is the minimum that OS X install takes up? I don't want to give 
test a lot of space, but enough for an install with a bit of room for 
playing comfortably.
