This has nothing to do with Apple's desktop ZFS implementation indeed. 
We actually use MacOS X 10.2. :-(

Yes!

May be this is some kind of resource fork problem. I don't know whether 
teh Apple dev tools use resource forks while building. I only know that 
this worked as long as the home dirs were on Solaris UFS exported via 
NFS and no longer works since we moved them to Solaris ZFS (NFS 
exported with the corresponding ZFS feature).
