Guys, you already know this, but you're *both* right, it just depends  
on the circumstances.  So there's really no need to argue about it.

Sometimes it's useful stopping the user from doing something daft.   
Sometimes it isn't necessary, and sometimes it's only necessary to  
warn them and let them proceed at their own risk.  It depends on the  
user, on the piece of software, and on the potential effects of it  
going wrong or not working.  It's a judgement call.

I think we all know when it would or wouldn't be appropriate, and  
certainly those of us who have commercial or shareware products also  
have some idea of the impact it's going to have on customer support.
