iTunes plugin query

I've dug through the Mac and Windows SDKs for iTunes plugins and  
searched every set of terms I could think of on Google for the answer  
to the following question:

How can an iTunes plugin find the path/url/fsref/whatever for the  
currently-playing track?

I can find the leaf file name, but nothing more useful so far. I'm  
sure I'm missing something, because it's trivially available via  
AppleScript, but I'd hate to start writing self-sent AppleEvents if  
there's a 1- or 2- line routine already available.
