PDFAnnotationMarkUp: how to get it?

I am  trying to add PDFAnnotationMarkups to a PDF document in a  
PDFView. However they never display. I do use -[PDFView  
setNeedsDisplayInRect:] after adding the annotation (with the correct  
rect), and if I use any other type of annotation they display  
correctly. BTW, I am using the bounds from PDFSelections generated  
from a search in the PDFDocument. Would anyone have an idea what I  
could have missed?
