Apple has always relied on hardware to make their profit afaik. They
don't make their profit from Mac OS X sales, no the profit comes from
the macintosh's they sell...Mac OS X is merely something they've
created to make the Macintosh appealing (and boy does it work!). So
what do they do? They mark up the machines so that people who buy the
machines help provide them with profit to pay the programmers and
other business expenses while at the same time allowing them to offer
Mac OS X standalone for macs at a cheap price for those who are able
to upgrade to a newer version of Mac OS X without buying a new mac.
That limit probably does not have as much a technical grounding as it
does financial, Apple probably took a look at their finances and
decided that unless they made this cutoff they wouldn't make the
amount of profit that they want to once Leopard is released. Remember
that since the OS isn't what makes their profit they have to figure
out a way to get enough people to buy more Macintosh's to keep their
finances in check and that is what I believe they are doing here.
