10.4: pre-login netinfo mounting of afp file serves

I want to automount HFS file space from a server, in such a way that
the permissions on the mount are exactly those on the server.

http://www.bombich.com/mactips/automount.html suggests several
options for a mount entry in netinfo.

set vfstype to nfs: this gives me the right permissions, but it looks
like Tiger doesn't treat it as a hfs file system

set vfstype to url, add url==afp://;AUTH=NO%20USER%20AUTHENT@hostname/
filepath to opts: seems to give hfs fils space, but wrong permissions

Obviously OS X server serves HFS home directories with the right
permissions! What is the secret?

Does Leopard offer any improvement, now that the 'evil' netinfo is gone?
