A bunch of property lists managed directly by the DirectoryService
daemon (which also subsumed the functionality of lookupd), located at
/var/db/dslocal and /var/db/DirectoryService. The supported
command-line interface is dscl, and there's no real GUI to speak of
(although there's a new interface to "advanced" settings if you
right-click on a user in the System Preferences pane).
