10.5 default username and password after install

     Yesterday I started an install of 10.5.  It was a fresh install as 
I instructed it to erase the disk.  It was still running when I left for 
the day.  At that time I had not yet been prompted to enter any user 
information although I had entered the serial number.  I don't remember 
exactly what screen it was at when I left.  When I returned this morning 
I was presented with a login screen.  I tried admin and root with blank 
passwords, the hardware serial number and various other values.  I even 
attempted the admin username and password from the previous install just 
in case it hadn't really erased the disk.  I was never able to get it.
     I've already had to do a second fresh install to remedy the 
situation but I'd like to know the answer for future reference.  When an 
install is left running, does it set up some default username and 
password?  If so, what?
