It's almost certainly the HP device. Many, many, HP devices  
(including my primary inkjet) have problems with USB hubs, powered or  
not. Consider yourself lucky that your MFD prints using the hub, mine  
refuses to print unless connected directly. Everything else works  
just fine of my USB hubs. (Two of them, daisy-chained together, both  
Belkins. I'm not overly fond of the design, but they work.)
