I have a folder on a server with 25,983 tif image files in them -  
with average size 200KB - and via AFP in ListView it opened up in  
about 30 seconds.

I have 100Mbit/s connection to the Server and that is about 4 hops  
away from me.

My guess is also that it is not the Finder, but rather the network  
that is not able to handle the burst of traffic.
