Whether it is or isn't, the point is, your assertion that the Finder was
*obviously* downloading every icon, or that somehow it was asking for gobs
more data with icons was not the problem.

You're also assuming the sole reason for the slowdown is the Finder, when it
could just as easily be Launch Services or some other component. You won't
care, because as far as you're concerned, it's the Finder. However, the ONLY
thing we know is that there's more processing going on with regard to list
view. Where all of that is happening? We don't know yet.
