file sharing painfully slow

And if it turns out the Finder is asking for both the icons supported  
in that list view? Fair enough, we don't know exactly what's going  
on, but certainly at least in column view turning off icons results  
in a very usable situation, whereas with them on, it's a big problem.

I guess what I need to do is time list view vs. column view. I  
haven't done that, but they're both resulting in a very negative user  
experience.
