It's not just the Finder. The OS X Server AFP server is a bit dumb  
about this as well.

Have a look at Extreme-Z-IP and the recent MacEnteprise.org webcast  
on it. GroupLogic have done some work to reduce the absurd amount of  
statting that goes on.
