file sharing painfully slow

Does this seem colossally ridiculous after five major iterations of  
the OS? I'm not sure which is worse, that it takes almost 5 minutes  
to receive unimportant and redundant information about a list of  
files in a directory, or that the Finder is completely unusable while  
waiting for such data. But certainly both at once creates a really  
negative user experience.

I wonder if sharing this with a protocol that doesn't support icons,  
such as SMB instead of AFP, would resolve this problem. Or NFS?
