Migration Assistant and Quicken database?

How? I've tried copying it with the Finder, I've tried using cp, and  
I've tried tar, and Quicken rejects the copies, "This is not a valid  
Quicken database." I don't know what's so special about the original  
DB file, but I was told a few years ago that they use 'physical block  
access' or somesuch, which would render a data copy of it useless.  
Granted, he's using an older version (Q2004 on 10.3.9, I think).
