OK, first Safari and Firefox are applications, as I'm sure you know.

Have you tried dropping any [/Library | ~/Library]/Internet Plug-Ins?

Have you trashed their preferences?

Can you define "freezes" more? What does Spin Control say is 
happening? Does sc_usage reveal anything? Does at any time the 
application get marked as "not responding"?
