Cannot ping local IP alias

Hi,

I'm having problems connecting to an IP alias set up on the same
machine as the connection attempt. The machine (charlotte) can ping
localhost and other machines in the subnet, and other machines can
ping charlotte, on both its canonical IP and aliased IPs.

This is an extract from arp -a on charlotte:
lille-int.global-village.net (206.12.148.4) at 0:2:b3:a4:a7:a2 on en0
[ethernet]
calgary.global-village.net (206.12.148.21) at 0:3:93:b5:db:24 on en0
[ethernet]
sitemaker.umich.edu (206.12.148.41) at (incomplete) on en0 [ethernet]
<snip>

So obviously, charlotte doesn't know how to route requests for
sitemaker.umich.edu. The way I set up the IP aliases was to edit /
etc/IPAliases.conf:
en0:206.12.148.41:255.255.255.0
en0:206.12.148.42:255.255.255.0
<snip>

I'm guessing that I can use an arp add command to add the route
manually, but I'm confused as to why the route isn't automatically
set up via the ip alias facility.

Ultimately, I'll be using curl to pull some data from a specific page
on sitemaker.umich.edu.
