Copy from Read-Only server

In Mac OS X, for as long as I can remember, when you connect to a
read-only server AFP share it and then copy a file from the server to
your Desktop, it makes your local copy of the file read-only (even
though you can get-info on it and make it read-write). Is there a
way to change this behavior to make it read-write by default when you
make a local copy? I generally understand the reason for preserving
file permissions, but in our case we have a lot of files that are on
a read-only server as templates and it is annoying to have to tell
people to open the read-only file and do a save-as to make it work
(the whole get-info thing is even more confusing for them).
