Copy from Read-Only server

In Mac OS X, for as long as I can remember, when you connect to a  
read-only server AFP share it and then copy a file from the server to  
your Desktop, it makes your local copy of the file read-only (even  
though you can get-info on it and make it read-write).  Is there a  
way to change this behavior to make it read-write by default when you  
make a local copy?  I generally understand the reason for preserving  
file permissions, but in our case we have a lot of files that are on  
a read-only server as templates and it is annoying to have to tell  
people to open the read-only file and do a save-as to make it work  
(the whole get-info thing is even more confusing for them).
