servermgrd crashes on "empty response"

Trying to run Server Admin (OSXS 10.4.8, 2GHz PPC), I get servermgrd  
crashing. The crash stack has routine  
ServerSerialNumStr_Validate_Internal as the culprit.

Is this a case of a corrupted file, perhaps? I've rebooted, and  
there's plenty of disk space. servermgrd crashes any time I try to  
connect to it, even from the machine it's running on.

Any ideas on how to repair this?
