checksum problem with downloaded disk images

As I expected, the problem was some sort of kernel corruption,  
possibly the result of panic crash. I solved the problem by copying  
an identical (but not corrupted) kernel into /.
(Note: Mac Tiger discussion board listed several persons who also  
experienced this problem.)
