checksum problem with downloaded disk images

I am getting consistent checksum validation failure for dmg files
downloaded. It is appearing for any dmg files I try to download with
any browser or with curl. BUT the problem is present only on one
workstation. Other computers on the same network using the same
interface to the internet do not have the problem. Here is a typical
hdiutil report for a download of Flip4Mac WM components:
-------
[harvey:~] rpeskin% hdiutil attach /Volumes/Users/rpeskin/Desktop/WM\
Components\ 2.1.dmg
Checksumming Driver Descriptor Map (DDM : 0)...

hdiutil: attach failed - invalid checksum
-------------------
Where do I look for a solution to this problem?
thanks,
