File system performance

Hi all,

I'm looking for informations on the performances of OSX Server  
concerning creation and access of directories and files.

We may have a very large number of users : now 1000 but soon 1 000  
000 and more.
Each user will access their data from the web through a web site.

The questions concern how many directories or files one can create/ 
access with best performance.

Tests we have made show that
	- file writing/reading spend the same time independently of the  
files in a directory.
	- creating a directory takes much more time if a few thousand  
directories are already there (so we use a hierarchy such as 0/1/...)

Is it some links or starting point to look at ?
