while ffmpegX is a seriously useful piece of software it will only join
2 files at a time and being lazy I was hoping to use a perl script to
do some batch processing - I guess at this point compiling the ffmpeg
executable would be an option

hmmm that probably is what I'm coming up against - bizarrely though
I've seen webpages advocating cat for joining multiple avi files
together and handing off the resultant file to mencoder to straighten
out.
