Since I got feedback from someone suffering the same problem and
someone that needed some clarification, let me add to my post with
these comments and a few links with one having a possible solution:

Clarifications:

I wanted to indicate what is working at what not. What I omitted, is
that I can ping from home to the server at work and other minis on
the same switch do work fine. This rules out some network problems by
itself.

I wanted to convey, that I don't have an elaborate setup with the
local Netinfo inheriting information from other Netinfo servers and
that I didn't manually "tune" anything.

My usual expectation reading my mail up to this point would have
been, that I was using my own - not so stable - nameserver (I used
to). That's not the case.

HAVEN'T TESTED THIS YET *

from the page:

Technical Details

Lookupd has a bug (rdar://3632865) in its cache cleanup code that
causes it to randomly crash. CrashReporter, the system crash log
agent, does not properly handle lookupd crashes, and as a result,
when lookupd crashes, the process is not terminated. Since lookupd
has not terminated, mach_init does not respawn lookupd. From this
point, any application that attempts to access lookupd, either
directly or indirectly, will hang.
