As the OP, I just wanted to once again say thanks for the help from  
everyone. I always keep interesting/useful discussions like this as  
references for later, and since I didn't even know about xargs at  
all, I'm off to read the man pages on that (or perhaps even to  
experiment with manopen/opeman that I've also just learned about...).

This has been so useful, I hesitate to add this footnote. I have  
asked questions on this list in the past. This was the most  
successful and fruitful result ever.  I wish all questions were dealt  
with so healthily and usefully--in the past I have been (and have  
seen others berated) for my (their) ignorance. I just want to say  
thanks for helping me learn something this time.
