OmniFocus and the End of MobileMe

by Derek R. on May 23, 2012

Behold! A new cloud-y day is upon us. We shall make backups of old, look to the new, and say goodbye to MobileMe.

Apple decided about a year and a half ago to shut down MobileMe, iCloud would be the new, better solution, and iDisk functionality would cease to exist.

That affects some OmniFocus users: if you’re still using MobileMe to sync your OmniFocus data, you need to switch. Our latest updates to OmniFocus remove all mention of iDisk and MobileMe, but your existing settings will continue to work up until the day the service is shut down, June 30th.

Afterwards, take some time to make the transition from MobileMe to iCloud. (Don’t miss out on the improved calendar, contact, and bookmark syncing, along with Photo Stream and Document Storage.) You can do that at me.com/move, and there’s a great Apple Support page here. (Update: Apple has removed both pages after the transition.)

Now a look at options:

The Omni Sync Server

Our own Omni Sync Server is fast, free, and extremely easy to set up (25 seconds if you move fast), and is run by a team of folks that are determined to craft the best server specifically for our applications.

You’ll also benefit from future, device-agnostic features.

Alternatives

  • If your data can’t leave the network, Bonjour syncing is handy. Public networks and firewalls occasionally cause pain, but can (usually) be remedied.

  • If you’re not using an iPhone or iPad, (physical) Disk syncing is another option. (Don’t use your Dropbox folder!)

  • Finally, use pretty much any WebDAV server. Search one out, set one up yourself if you know how, or have a friendly sysadmin set one up.

After picking a method or service, head to our “How do I Migrate?” page and finish up.

“How Do I Migrate” tl;dr: Sync all your devices, then sync your primary device again. Switch to your new sync server on each, starting with your primary device.

If you’re concerned about transitioning from MobileMe to something else, don’t hesitate to email us here or call at 800 315-6664.

Thanks for the reminder! Why not use Dropbox? I use it for syncing/centralising a few other apps and generally seems ok.  Will you be supporting iCloud?

OmniFocus does its own (complicated) merging when two devices have diverged and try to sync.  Dropbox tried to handle merging on its own, and doesn’t do a very good job, especially with something as complex as an OmniFocus database.  If two devices add different versions of a file, Dropbox leaves both copies in the folder, one with “(So-and-so’s conflicted copy)” appended to the filename.  That’s awesome when two people are updating a Photoshop file and you want to see what happened.  It’s not so awesome for all the hidden files inside OmniFocus’s storage.

It might be possible for OmniFocus to use the Dropbox API for syncing (rather than using Dropbox through the filesystem) and still get the chance to handle conflicts.  But WebDav support is more flexible and has been in OmniFocus from the beginning, and using the Dropbox API would be a whole mess of new work.  Instead, they decided to give us free WebDav hosting and spend their effort on other features.

I imagine the same goes for iCloud, although since so many users of OmniFocus will have iCloud accounts, maybe it’ll be worth the effort to write.  I doubt it, though, unless Omni Sync Server becomes to expensive to maintain.

I can vouch for Dreamhost for WebDav hosting.  I used them for a while before I got MobileMe.

Regarding Dropbox: I was all set to link to this forum post from our CEO on why it’s not the best choice for syncing OmniFocus data, but then Peter beat me to the punch and provided even more detail. Nicely done. :-)
Interested parties may also want to check out a previous blog post that goes over our efforts towards supporting iCloud (and, to an extent, Dropbox) in our apps.

Did this myself several weeks ago.

Fairly happy with the results but there wasn’t any mention anywhere that I could find about changing the OmniFocus Reminders Calendar subscription in iOS to point to the new sync server.

I figured it out but it was a manual process. (Maybe I’m the only person using that feature of OmniFocus?)

plz update the link to your Omni Sync Server in this blog-post
it currently is: https://omnigroup.com/sync/ ... which times out due to the missing www-prefix
i guess it should be: https://www.omnigroup.com/sync/

Hi,

Can I create notes on a particular date without creating a task? I compare the app with Daily Notes. This app is simple in task management and I need more complex tast management like Omnifocus. The functionality for taking notes is also important for me.

I can’t find that much info on the notes section.
