OmniFocus 1.8 for Mac is now available

by Ken Case on September 9, 2010

Today we're releasing OmniFocus 1.8, a free update for anyone using OmniFocus for Mac. OmniFocus 1.8 includes numerous updates to improve the user interface, workflow, and reliability.

The 1.8 update will now clean up automatically when switching views, moving items to their proper locations, just like OmniFocus for iPhone and OmniFocus for iPad. Filtering is improved with the more flexible View Bar. All items, including groups, projects, and Inbox items, can appear in Context-mode lists, making them easier to find. Also, groups and projects can now become next actions, so there is no need to switch to Planning mode to finish up a project.

Perspectives can now be easily shared as files, by simply dragging them out of OmniFocus. As introduced in OmniFocus for iPhone, a new bookmarklet can send web pages to the Inbox from a web browser.

Synchronization is faster and even more stable. Additionally, due item alerts can be synchronized alongside the OmniFocus database as a calendar.

For more information, including complete release notes, please visit the OmniFocus download page. If you're already using OmniFocus, you can Check for Updates from the OmniFocus menu to automatically download and install this latest update.

We hope you enjoy OmniFocus 1.8!

The OmniFocus team is fantastic. Great job on the updates: already seeing an improvement (yeah, in like 1 minute) with tasks refreshing properly when switching views. As much as I love OmniFocus, the iPad version really set the bar high for you, so I’m delighted to see some updates to Mac app as well. The sync definitely worked quicker on immediate launch. Less than half the usual launch time, and it was already fast as it was.

You guys are excellent; keep up the great work!

Can’t wait to see what’s next…

More Omni-goodness.
But as soon as I updated the mac app, my sync’ing broke.
I get this error message:

Unable to read document.
Unable to read the contents of “https://www.mydavname.com:2078/OmniFocus.ofocus/

Sux.

All -

Major congrats on this release.  Having been using the Sneaky Peeks, this release has a lot of great features.  Very glad.  I now recommend you shut down your Macs and go to happy hour.  It is already almost 2pm.

Thanks for putting our great product!

Qa’id: Sorry to hear that! Could you contact our support ninjas at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and give them more details about your configuration, such as what type of WebDAV server you’re using?

In the meantime, you could either return to OmniFocus 1.7.5, or you’re welcome to use our Omni Sync Server.

Thanks for the response and the suggestions! (And sorry for posting a support issue here on the blog - I should have meditated on it for a second before leaving a comment.)

Although this syncing issue is tripping me up for a minute and needs further attention on my end, it doesn’t take away from the general degree of juiciness that I see in OmniFocus, or my constant and satisfactory use of the app.

@Mathias: Omnifocus has become unusable for me because of that :(

Have to downgrade.

Where can I find the bookmarklet?

I searched in the help, and I looked at everything in the preferences,
however I could not find any mention of the bookmarklet besides in the release notes.

(As you may recall, on the iphone the bookmarklet is mentioned in the preferences.)

Bart,

Most projects won’t have a context assigned, so they’ll show up under No Context. This probably isn’t so useful when you’re trying to look at a Contexts list (in which case just click on “Contexts” in the sidebar to exclude everything which doesn’t have a context), but it’s very useful if you’re trying to look at everything which is coming due this week, or everything which has been recently modified or completed, etc.

As noted above, you can hide everything with no context by clicking on Contexts in the sidebar.

You can also hide everything which is unavailable by setting your View->Availability Filter to “Available”, which is how I usually look at my context lists. (In that case, you’ll only see projects show up once all of their actions have been completed, in which case that’s probably a fine time to either check them off or add more actions.)

Finally, you can simply select “View->Hide Parent Items in Context Mode” if you simply want to hide all projects and groups.

Hope this helps!

Benjamin: Here’s a pointer to the Send to OmniFocus bookmarklet.  (Or you can use a synced bookmarklet from your iPhone or iPad, they’re identical.)

Ken: Thanks for the quick reply. The bookmarklet works perfectly for me! I am using it with Firefox 3.6.8 on Mac OS X 10.6.4.

I like the new flexibility! Any idea if or when OmniFocus will allow multiple contexts per task?  As a software product manager, at least one third of my tasks would be more efficient if I were able to assign two contexts to them.

Thanks!

People are still using Omnifocus for Mac even with the iPad version released?

(Just kidding….sort of.)

It would be great to see the Forecast feature on the Mac version.
