OmniFocus 1.7 for iPhone, and an update on OmniFocus for iPad

by Linda Sharps on June 23, 2010

Hello, esteemed Omni blog readers! We have two bits of news for you today, both OmniFocus-focused.

BIT O' NEWS THE FIRST

OmniFocus 1.7 for iPhone is now available! The big changes are related to iOS 4: the app is now multi-tasking aware, so it's compatible with the fast app switching in iOS 4; database optimizations can now be completed in the background on iOS 4, and OmniFocus 1.7 now uses local notifications to display due alerts when running on iOS 4 (giving you the option to receive alerts for due tasks, even when you're not syncing with a server).

Also, all the artwork has been refreshed in preparation for that fancy new high-resolution Retina display on iPhone 4. Plus, the app now periodically releases the magical and revolutionary scent of mango. (One of these statements is not true.)

If you're like me and haven't updated your phone yet because you like to wait until everyone else has already done it and you can confirm there are no reports of people saying things like "ARGH MY RINGTONE GOT REPLACED WITH A VUVUZELA", you should grab this latest version of OmniFocus anyway, because it also includes some handy fixes and overall improvements.

OmniFocus 1.7 for iPhone can be found at your friendly neighborhood App Store.

BIT O' NEWS THE SECOND

Some of you have expressed interest in an update on the projected release date for OmniFocus for iPad. Interest has been communicated in a variety of ways: gentle email queries, polite forum discussions, and of course there was that brick that got tossed through our lobby window wrapped in a note reading YOU SAID JUNE YOU DILL-WEEDS WHAT GIVES.

Here's our current plan: we are hoping to submit OmniFocus for iPad to Apple next week, on June 30. I emphasize hoping because it's not a certainty and this date was extracted with great reluctance. Many Bothans died to bring you this information.

We wish you could get your hands on it right now, but as tempting as it is to rush it out the door for all the folks who are waiting for it, there's still work that needs to be done. I've been using the development builds and it's really exciting to see how things are coming together. It's very close to being ready, at this point it's all about fixing the rough edges and working on the UI.

When I say that, I don't want you to get a mental picture of engineers arguing over the pixel placement of one button. I mean, I'm sure that happens—ha ha ha, ENGINEERS—but I'm talking about a giant effort to influence how you feel when you use OmniFocus. This app needs to be more than a place to store your to-dos, you know? It needs to be a pleasure to interact with. It needs to be a place you want to go on a regular basis. It needs to be satisfying

I believe there are some features in OmniFocus for iPad that have the potential to change the way some of us feel about task management. Specifically, for people like me who are lazy about committing to a task manager and repeatedly fall off the wagon, I think this could be the perfect combination of app and device that keeps us engaged.

But we have to do it right. If I don't enjoy opening the app and interacting with it, I won't stick with it. Simple as that.

So, all that's to say: we're close. We're really, really close. This part is mission-critical, though, and we hope you're okay with waiting just a bit longer. We're pretty sure it's going to be worth it.

Fantastic news. The new refresh looks great on my new iPhone 4, too!! Thanks, can’t wait to get the iPad version.

I just hope it is not $40 or $50 USD for the iPad version, that would be murder for me, I’m already saving for the Desktop version after I got and used the iPhone version.

Carlos

06.23.10 3:50 PM

I’m with Carlos on this, something just above the ipad version. I say this would be best as more people would be likely to buy all 3 versions of the app

JUst installing 1.7 on my 3g. Really looking forward to trying it out on my 4 tomorrow (hopefully!!)

Don’t rush it guys, make it awesome. I’m a huge fan of the desktop client, and I like the iPhone app, but I agree that the iPad version has a real opportunity to be a game changer. If an extra week is what it takes to make it sing then take it!

James

06.23.10 4:50 PM

Yeah, I love both Mac and iPhone versions. But i can’t be dropping 40 bucks on a third version. Has to be some kind of discount for people who own the desktop and/or iphone versions. Keep up the great work!

Really looking forward to Omnifocus on the iPad.  Please don’t price it outrageously high like Omnigraffle for the iPad.  I want to be able to buy it with a clear conscience.  I have almost all of your products, but I just cannot fathom the price of Omnigraffle.  I really think you guys priced yourselves out of the market with that one.  Please don’t repeat that with Omnifocus.

Other than that… I’m sure it will be great :)

Jason Miller

06.23.10 5:48 PM

Hey, I’m as eager to get my hands on the iPad version as anyone (and yes I’ve been checking the forums several times a day too) but you know what, I’d really much rather you guys do what you do best and don’t submit it until you’re really happy to do so.  I love my Omni apps and I’m totally happy to wait until it’s right.

This update is one of the reasons why I love OmniGroup and their software. As a software QA Director, I really appreciate the attention to detail and the willingness to potentially risk the wrath of the user base to get out quality software.

I’m looking forward to OmniFocus for the iPad but I want it to work.  The Star Wars reference is just a big bonus :)

I have to agree with the other posters though.  I have paid for OmniFocus twice already. Some kind of discount for those of us who have done so would be nice.

I agree, I’ve bought desktop and iPhone versions and don’t have much to shell out for yet another version. I have some apps equally great that made universal apps. Please at least discount it for launch day or for those who bought both.

Thanks.

I bought the iPhone version when it first came out and cost twelve thousand dollars or whatever.  And I’ve had the Mac version since before that.

I keep almost abandoning it then coming back, and it’s basically because I’m extremely happy with it as a Task-Capturing System but haven’t yet found my footing with it as a Task-Tracking System.

It’s worth considering that, so far, I haven’t seen anything in iPadVille that’s much good at capturing tasks (or ideas or whatever).  I’m really hoping OmniFocus for iPad gives me that, plus good syncing between my various computers and tablets and phones.

REALLY Glad for the update.  Running OF for iPhone on the iPad is just not cool

Bob

06.23.10 10:11 PM

I’m waiting too ... but re: some comments on Omnigraffle ... sure it’s expensive, but I coughed up the cash, and it really is a powerful app ... it’s not some dinky-doodle file viewer, it’s a serious piece of work.  I can appreciate the development that must have gone on behind it.  I don’t mind paying - here and there - for some *real* quality apps.
But P.S… Omnigraffle produces core output.  OmniFocus just helps you get there.  I hope it’s not as much as Omnigraffle ;-)

Jordan

06.23.10 11:55 PM

It’s a worthy update. In fact, the iPhone app is much more usable now. It is the way it was meant to be in the first place.

Please add background server sync. This would make it a truly awesome companion to the Mac OF.

An artist must have thick enough skin to give a finger to the impatient. OmniFocus has to date been life changing. Any reasonable price will be happily paid by those of us that “get” what it does and for whom the tool nearly daily saves our asses. Its a secret weapon of the highly effective. So, by the way, I really don’t mind if you charge a little higher price and thin out my competition in the productivity rat race. Also, a healthy price for the product will support rapid feature addition and evolution of the product by Omni Group. A sincere thanks to you for your work. Every product I have purchased from you has delivered *extreme* value to date.

Is possible to have alerts on iphone just like the push function?  Thanks.

Dan

06.24.10 12:32 AM

Guys,

Love the wow factor in OmniFocus 1.7 iPhone.  Yes we want it on iPad - like - last week, but more than that, we want it right.  So really - take as long as you need.  We won’t start using it till it’s right, so don’t release it before then!

As for pricing?  I dropped £600 for my iPad, and omnifocus will probably be the killer app that locks me into this platform for life (as with the iPhone version - it’s why I got the iphone in the first place).  Given the price of these devices, stick to your guns on pricing (crouching for a barrage of hate mail) we spent a lot on these devices and you invested a ton in developing them, if your money back guarantee is in place, then hey, what have we got to loose?

Thanks for all your amazing work and sheer dedication.

Sorry about the brick.

I know it is a bit late, but….

1) Please add a password option… my iPad is popular among the rest of the family… kids playing games and drawing…. I am worried about my 3 year old playing a “delete tasks game” in my OF and for the same reason I never installed the iPhone version on my iPad.

Until Apple introduces some sort of user level / user password - we need passwords on the apps.

2) Hoping for an excellent review feature… I believe reviewing is hard to get done when many other tasks presents themselves during the workday, but review is as important as anything. I really want to take my iPad for an evening review in the living room when things are more relaxed.

Keep up the good work.

Kristoffer

06.24.10 1:42 AM

Some great points above….

I’ll second:

- If an extra week is what it takes to make it sing then take it!
- I don’t mind paying…for some *real* quality apps, but some kind of discount for people who own the desktop and iphone versions…I own both thats why!
- Please add a password option… my iPad is popular among the rest of the family… “delete tasks game”
- Keep up the good (*great*) work.

Appreciate the update - and the humor. Take your time. UI is everything. Most of us choose Omnifocus (and other Omni apps) because you DON’T push stuff out the door. June is a deadline you set, so June is a deadline you can change. GTD is about “re-negotiating commitments” when you need to in order to achieve your big-picture objectives. Bless you all.

06.24.10 5:19 AM

thanks for the update. clear, clever, and concise, just how we want omnifocus for the ipad to be.

(btw: I sympathize with the argument that omnigraffle is overpriced, BUT…., it is an amazing piece of work, and despite the big dose of “what am I doing?” when I bought it, I don’t regret it for a second).

That said, please don’t stick it to me again with omnifocus for ipad.

Mitch

06.24.10 8:48 AM

Your philosophy of product development is one of the reasons I bought OmniFocus instead of a competitor, to say nothing about feature/function superiority.

I have been in software development for 40 years (started with stone tablets) and yes, it has to work (although all too often beta releases sneak out due to external pressures), but that is not enough to make a superior product. Your statement of “doing it right” and “you need to want to open the application” shows product management maturity that we see too infrequently in the marketplace and always have.

So I will grouse about not having it yet and I will complain about buying it three times, but don’t even consider releasing it “before its time”. Continue the good work on the software and the product philosophy.

Thanks.

Waiting for OmniFocus for the iPad is making my skin tingle… Graffle is fantastic; I really didn’t care that it was $50. I use Graffle, Focus, Outliner and Plan every week, so I’d already resolved to committing to purchase all four for the iPad, as I would far rather work with them on a touch interface from my couch, Starbucks, in a traffic jam, or in the washroom than be stuck at a desk using it.

Keep up the good work guys. I know Apple’s idea of keeping everything hidden until their big reveal is awesome, and works well for them, but I’m really itching for even just one screenshot of OmniFocus just to satisfy the tingling in my arms…. this is gonna go on all week until it comes out, you know…. help us… just a little screen shot. Or two.

I have an iPad but not an iPhone.  Can I buy the iPhone app now and receive a discount on the iPad version when it’s released?

Fiid

06.24.10 2:31 PM

I have been with you guy since outliner and really love the program, but the purple icon.  You’re killing me.  I mean Leroy Nieman is an inspiration for all of us.  The interior icons are great, but the app icon sits on my home screen.  I hope there’s a redraft.

06.24.10 4:06 PM

C’mon guys, it’s not that hard….I used to bullseye womprats in my T-16 back home and they’re not much bigger than 2 meters….
Seriously, thanks for the update and all the hard work I’m sure is going into this app.  It promises to seriously be the reason some people may buy an iPad, if it’s done right.  And I’m sure you guys will. Looking forward to it—and thanks!
BTW, 1.7 looks great on my new iPhone….

I’m running Omnifocus for iPhone on my iPad and I’m FREAKING OUT. HURRY.

George

06.24.10 5:51 PM

Thanks for the update. All that I really want is the ability to drag actions or tasks that ar children, from parent to parent. The way I use OF, is in a manufacturing section. I’d love the ability to move a job from one phase to another, without have to go to my laptop. Basically, I hope the iPad version is more like the desktop, than the iPhone version.

If it is as good as the desktop version, I plan to implement iPads company wide, with OF as the core app. I do not mind a reasonable price. So if it lands between the two existing versions, I’ll be good with that. I certainly did not the mind paying $80, or $20. So $40-$60 would seem reasonable, if it is between in functionality.

I would love to be able to integrate OF into Omni Plan, using them in conjunction, if possible.

Chris

06.24.10 6:25 PM

Thanks for the update!

I have no idea what price point you’re looking at, but I’d be prepared to pay something similar to the cost of OmniFocus for the iPhone. Even at that price I’ll be asking myself whether I *really* need OmniFocus on two platforms.

Alex

06.24.10 6:51 PM

Thanks for the iPhone version. New app icon is so cool! Looks amazing on my phone screen. And re-designed project and context icons look much better too. I wish you could incorporate all of them in your desktop version somehow now… :-)

Guntis Bukalders

06.24.10 9:12 PM

I want the old icon back.  Please.  I hate the purple one.

Andre

06.24.10 9:59 PM

First, thank you SO much for finally updating your icon, which was previously a huge liability for the brand. I’m afraid I still don’t think your icon is a market leader in its product category, but at least it isn’t an embarrassment any longer. Main question mark now is the choice of purple.

To all the posters hoping for some sort of discount for people who own other versions of the software, the way the app store functions prevents this from being a possibility, unless the iPad version was to be sold as an in-app purchase from within the iPhone version. Would appear that the app store also prevents things like educational pricing, which again is a pity particularly from my point as I’d be eligible for it!

100% agree with password at login… don’t want my sons checking items off my to-do list, as I’d never know they were gone or what I’d lost track of. Actually, what I’d really like is a cool customisable shape-squiggle that I have to do on login to unlock it. But yes, I’d settle for a PIN number/password interface. Just something.

Keep up the great work, Omni!

:)

What kind of turn around time have you all been experiencing getting approvals from Apple after your submission to the App Store? Just wondering when we are likely to see the app for purchase.

Thanks for all the subtle updates:  Images look great / Icon Looks Great.

Background Feature needs to be exploited:  Having a background Sync would be ridiculous! Or sync schedule on the iPhone that would run in the background.

Thanks for a great product.  You guys are transparent and always negotiate people’s expectations.

06.27.10 2:20 PM

Ken: Echoing what others have said, your transparency and candor are deeply appreciated.  I love the iPhone multitasking in the iPhone 1.7 version.  Looking forward to what you do with the iPad version.

To Those Asking about Price:  The iPhone version is $19.99.  My guess is that the iPad version will cost between $30 and $40.  My hope is that we will get continue to get free upgrades with all three versions for considerably longer instead of a discount on the iPad product.

Its the 28th
You were touting a June 30th release for Omnifocus for iPad
You continually fail to give any kind of status or update on what you are doing
Do you have ANY idea how far behind your competition you are falling?
Fanboys will jump up and down and defend you
But you are JUST LOSING GROUND EVERY DAY
Ground you could maintain my giving regular (say weekly) MEANINGFUL updates

But you don’t
And Apple is now promoting your far more attractive, if somewhat less functional, competitor

I really liked Omnifocus, but I have to say now that I have needed to use Things for sometime, because your late with a product release, it is actually pretty good

Hows that secrecy paying off for you?

I hope you are thinking long and hard about your price point, because that is just about the only thing you have left that could get you back into the running.

Gods of Marketing help you when Things releases cloud synicing - which is less far off than you might think, and at this rate might beat your iPad product out the door.

Given what you charge for your products, try hiring a good project manager and a few solid testers. And while your at it, a UI designer who doesn’t have a tin eye. Things (for all its MANY MANY failings) is at least MacOS and iOS level attractive. Omnifocus has an OS9 aesthetic desperately in need of a refresh.

There you go, said my piece. Let the flames begin

Waiting…waiting…waiting!  This blog post just makes the waiting worse!  Can you leak a copy on an iPad and leave it somewhere?  Maybe send pics of the app running to a Vietnamese magazine for us to read about.  Some of us just don’t have the patience of a Jedi!

Josh

06.29.10 7:20 AM

Sorry, but it this is redonkulus! Surely you knew Apple was making an iPad and for it to take this long has been unacceptable. I have moved on to “Things” and found that it is just as good as OF for my needs.

How did “Things” get the work done so much faster than you guys? Oh! What a great idea, I guess they actually either work and have enough people…

goodbye,
Thom

thomp

06.29.10 8:25 AM

Hey Thomp,

I hear your frustration. I used Things because, as a day-one owner of the iPad, I was eager to have my tasks there. However, I’ve gone back to OmniFocus even though the iPad app isn’t out yet. Why? OmniFocus is far, far more robust than Things. The much-touted simplicity ended up being far too little for my needs. But another main reason was the absolute lack of cloud sync on Things.

Go read the Things forums. You will find a near rebellion among the most zealous users not only because of the lack of cloud sync, but because the company refuses to give even the smallest hints at a time frame, what they’re working on, etc. *That* is what is unacceptable.

I find the openness and candor of the Omni people to be refreshingly wonderful. I would like OmniFocus on my iPad yesterday, but they’ve told me I’m getting cloud sync by the end of June, and I believe them.

Hope you find productivity wherever you end up.

Cheers,
+Christopher

Christopher

06.29.10 8:44 AM

Clarifying my last comment: I meant to say, “They told me I’m getting *an iPad app with* cloud sync by the end of June, and I believe them.”

Christopher

06.29.10 8:46 AM

Christopher,

I bet you won’t get it by June! They said they are submitting it to Apple and just watch Apple will take weeks probably to release it via the app store.

I was hooked on OF, but like I said Things basically is cool for me. I just can’t believe OF was that low on their priority scale either. At Things they just do Things and I could care less about cloud syncing. I can’t even keep my iCal calendars and MobileMe synced right so I don’t have any expectations of omni on that…

Bottom line is I am not loyal to omni and they are not that loyal to me since they are so slow to meet my needs. I just moved on. Watch though, the market demand is always met! There is some kid in a basement somewhere working that will make all this history. Remember Now Up to Date where are they now? They got slower and couldn’t keep up and that seems to me the first crack you see and I think that is happening with omni…

thanks
thom

Seriously?
I’m too busy working and using omnifocus for desktop and phone.  When iPad version comes out, I’ll be glad.  I say charge what the market will bear.  Gee, I guess folks think you should work for free.  They probably have never had to think about overhead, taxes, payroll etc.  Hey, maybe you guys should bust your tails for FREE?  Or do you expect to get paid for YOUR work?

Oh, and you high powered software developers, if you are such experts, write it yourselves.

All you children should be ashamed of your entitlement attitudes.  You know who you are.

Joel M

06.30.10 3:29 PM

Please stay focused…

Please let us have a discussion about how OF could get better and how it leverages our work today. Price negotiations happens on the market… Not in this blog. If we think it is value for money - we’ll buy it…. if not… they will know soon enough at OMNI.

They work… we buy… to do our work…. it is as simple as that.

The OF vs Things war is not very productive. It reminds me about the mac vs. windoze war a decade ago…

I believe most of us here are comitted to OF because we believe it’s the right choice for us. Others like differerent apps for good reasons. Diversity is an advantage for all. Don’t fight it.

Good, smart post. I’ve done this as well and I have to see it’s great in terms of creating brand and ultimately, awareness. I speak about puma shoes, which is the investors equivalent of lifestreaming—using social media tools to add to and plug into
the collective puma]http://www.pumashoescom.com”]puma shoes[/url]. I recently launched a book under the same brand. My website, puma speed cat,  will also ultimately serve as the homebase for other content products using the same content category.
