That looks really nice! I like the layout and the modern look!
Forecasts are really cool!!! My boss ask me about this any time!!!
We’ve done it in Omniplan, but it doesn’t work so well for me, because I have to do it two times.
One “light” version in Omnifocus and one “visually enhanced” version for him to pin to the wall (and to punish me, if I’ve missed a deadline of course ;-)
Can’t wait for it to get finished!
Really nice job so far! Keep it on!!!

Love the apps on all my mac devices. My one pet peeve with the mac has always been the amount of travel my cursor needs to do. The check box on the left, the note icon in the middle, the inspector at the right side. This drives me nuts. I spend all this time slamming back and forth across the screen. I would love it if all the stuff you click on would be all within an narrow vertical band just to the right of the projects and contexts list. That way, there is scrolling, and then very little left-right movement to click on what I want.

Thanks for you obsessive attention to details!

As good as Omni products are and as excited I am for OmniFocus 2, this presentation was really bad - disorganized & unrehearsed making it painful to watch. I wasn’t expecting a Steve Jobs performance but you guys make Steve Ballmer look polished. I guess all the focus (pun intended) goes towards developing your applications. Not a hater, just telling it like it is…I did watch the whole video though :)

Great video. Some really useful info in here.

Now I’m even more excited about getting my beta access.

Well done everyone.

Awesome! Looking forward to Omnifocus 2.0 Professional. The interface with event calendar and forecast will be super powerful for planning. With Omni focus 1.0, I recently switched to Due date focus and limited reviews as workaround. I can see how the Start date with review, and plan makes the process so much better.

Keep up the good work, and try not to let others pee in the pants!

I have been using OmniFocus since 2007 and can’t imagine my life without it.  I am excited to see all of the new “toys” to play with in version 2.  Thanks for making such a great product.  You guys (and gals) Rock!

Nice work with omnif2 it seems! However that was one confused debut video… Strange how unprepared the speakers are. Anyhow, looking forward to use the app!

It’s really disappointing , one and half year to come with such minor update on omnifocuse and yet schedule is slipping .....

Interesting that so many would apparently that prefer Ken & Co. spend their time polishing the presentation rather than the product.

The problem I have with forecast is that if I set a task start date without a due date it disappears from the iPad forecast screen the next day. The only way to keep it on my radar is through review (I don’t want to do that every day) or look at a specially designed perspective like David Sparks showed in his tutorial. Will I be able to see tasks started prior to today in forecast?

I liked the presentation, you guys seem to be very human, so nice and just prefer using the right brain-hemisphere…;-) As a private tester I’m really looking forward to check out OF2 in everyday-business.
Cheers from Berlin, Germany!

I’ve been scared away from OF because of the price. Totally glad to give it a try with the extended free trial but now that it’s over I wish I hadn’t tried it to begin with.  I really like it (although I’m only using it as a glorified To Do list) while trying to become proficient with GTD.  I was hoping this debut would open my eyes to better ways of using it, but the presentation was so disjointed and a bit sporadic to me.  For folks like me who aren’t current power users, this would have been a great opportunity to win us over to the OF community just by having a better planned presentation.  Nonetheless, I plan on purchasing OF2 as soon as it is released.  Until then, I suppose I’ll keep combing the internet to grab as much “training” on the current version.

I would like to buy your Omnifocus standard edition.  According to the video that is priced at 39.95.  Is there a way to purchase Omnifocus 1 for that price do I need to wait for Omnifocus 2 to buy your product?

Thanks,
Ari

Having bought through the app store it’d be great to get the same discount as a current user although I understand the app store lack of upgrade issues it’d be nice to see what some other companies have done whereby offering the discounted price for the first few days…

@Ari - We do eventually plan to make a $40 edition of OmniFocus available, but we are creating that edition by removing features that are in the currently shipping product. If folks purchase OmniFocus 1, they can use that now and get a free update to OmniFocus 2 when it ships. We have discussed possibly giving folks the option of upgrading to version 2 Standard if they choose to do so; by default, folks will get 2 Pro.

However, we don’t plan to reduce the price of OmniFocus 1 to $40 - that would induce buyers’ remorse in a bunch of folks who are currently happy with what they’ve already purchased. We don’t want to do that, so if you’re wanting to purchase OmniFocus 2 Standard, you’ll need to wait until it ships. (In the meantime, you can use the iOS editions, of course - they’re going to sync just fine with both OmniFocus 1 and 2.)

@Michael - We’ve asked Apple several times over the year for the ability to do that sort of discounting on the Mac App Store, but we’re dependent on them to add support to their system; that hasn’t happened yet. We’ll be happy to give you the discounted pricing, but your upgraded license will come from our store rather than Apple’s.

(The downside of promotional pricing when the product launches is that is that some customers that qualify for the “upgrade” pricing don’t hear about the option in time - they miss out. The approach we’re using ensures that everyone who purchases in the upgrade window can benefit, even if they don’t hear about OmniFocus 2 until next year.)

Looks great!  Wondering if the forecasting function will pull in Exchange calendar events (like OF for iPad does).

Hi there,

I also loved the video preview and I really like the integrated side bar and the forecast is amazing.  My one request is the ability to assign 2 contexts to an action item (Tagging would be great).  For example If I have to buy a box of cereal the contexts could be Superstore and Walmart and I would like the ability to have both as a context.  My other wish would be the ability to share a list or tasks with another user..

That’s it!  Please keep making great products!

Thanks Omni

Watched entire video, and while I agree with Eric Waj, (a bit unrehearsed, folks), I’d much rather have software developers be be better developers and excited about what they are doing than be excellent public speakers. I thought that the design that was out forth is excellent, and what we were looking for!! Can’t wait to get my hands on a beta release to put through the paces!
Thanks, OMNI, for all of the excellent thought that is consistently put into your products.

What about allowing an in-app purchase to upgrade from OF-1 to OF2?

@charlie We’d love it if the Mac App Store supported something like that (and we’ve asked Apple for options like this) but it’s not currently possible to the best of our knowledge.

I just started a new job and the first thing I did was find the coffee machine.

But the second thing I did was install OF and do a sweep of all the notes I took and determined the various projects and contexts necessary.

I am now setting up folders under my “Documents” folder on my Mac to mirror the folders I have created in OF. Then am setting up sub-folders for each project within a folder.

What would be awesome is the ability to automatically create a folder / sub-folder on the Mac when you create a new project, and then link to that sub-folder from within OF. That way all the material etc. can be stored and sort of indexed by project.

If you decide to implement - great!

Please consider adding Android support with Omnifocus 2. I’m trying to decide whether to upgrade Omnifocus or just pivot to some other product because aside from Omnifocus iOS does not meet my needs.

@Cameron I’m afraid we don’t have any plans for Android support in the foreseeable future. Our goal as a company isn’t to reach the widest possible audience or to make the most money - it’s to make a living working with the technology we find most compelling. Right now, that means making great productivity apps for OS X and iOS.

If a developer that’s passionate about the Android platform wants to tackle making an OmniFocus-alike app for that platform, we think that’s great. The database format is fairly self-documenting XML and there are posts on our forums describing how the sync process works. (Spootnik would be one example of a third-party developer reverse-engineering the sync process, for example.)

I think it’s a fine presentation, considering the target audience of people already familiar with the OmniFocus 1.x experience.

OmniFocus 2 seems nice, although I have prerred a less crowded, or better organised, Inspector panel. It looks as daunting as ever. It’s very crammed.

Nice to have somme news. But I was a bit disappointed by the design.
The Ipad version is for me the perfect combination of modern look and usability. In my opinion, the mac version should copy the look of that version.

As far as functions are concerned, it looks great. The flexibility of the Forecast mode is impressive (I hope it will also be possible to set Monday as the first day of the week).
Visually, it looks clean but not particularly interesting. It would be great if we could download themes such as solarized to use with the application. One other thing: full screen mode is kind of weird because you get vistas of empty space on the right, but you don’t really get any substantial gains in terms of visibility of key info. (This is a problem with full screen mode in most applications.) I can’t help thinking that there are more interesting things that could be done with this mode, such as focusing on the bit of the sidebar you’re in right now and making the type bigger in the main pane.

Come on OMNI!!!
I really really REALLY want to test OF2!!!
Since your debut show, I’ve searched a lot of GTD apps (again…), but every single one of them missing something…
OF2 could be the app I’m searching for…
OF1 have nearly all I need, but is (imho) very ugly :-D
Bring us OF2!!! Now!!!
Just kidding, but please hurry up ;-)

Kolja

Suggestion: To make OF even more consistent with GTD philosophy, it would be great to have an additional field for the energy needed to perform any task. This would surely help prioritize on an energy-availability day-to-day basis.
Thanks!

I like it, it is a huge improvement over version 1, and I will even buy the “Pro” version on the App Store again for the full price (I simply love the unified update process provided by the App Store, I do not want to go back to individual updates per app).

Now for my (only) negative, and somebody earlier mentioned distances to be traveled with the mouse - this is similar:

I would love to lose the inspector altogether. On my 27” screen the “i”-button to bring up the inspector will again be “miles” away from where my mouse is in most cases. Can’t there be a (alternate) layout that allows for in-place editing of all properties (permanently, or just when an item is selected)? I would really prefer that. I see the need for the inspector with multiple selections, but to edit a single item it remains to be quite a detour.
