iPad or Bust: OmniOutliner for iPad!

by Ken Case on May 5, 2011

When the iPad was announced last year, I posted that we were planning to bring all five of our productivity apps to iPad. We've just submitted OmniOutliner for iPad to the App Store, the fourth of those five apps:

I've been looking forward to OmniOutliner for iPad all year: OmniOutliner is the app I turn to whenever I want to collect and structure my thoughts (it's where I'm writing this text right now!) and it's great to be able to take those outlines with me and work with them on my iPad.

Now that OmniOutliner for iPad has reached GM, we're busy putting together some screenshots and an intro video which explain how the app fits together, and we look forward to posting those to our main website as well as more information here. For now, though, let me share this teaser video:

We don't know exactly how long it will take for OmniOutliner to be reviewed, but hopefully not more than a week or two. If you'd like to be notified by email the moment OmniOutliner is available on the App Store, you can subscribe to our low-traffic OmniNews mailing list or to our OmniOutliner Users mailing list. And, of course, you can watch this space—or follow @omnigroup or @omnioutliner (or me, @kcase) on twitter.

Meanwhile, let me briefly give some updates on our other projects! But first, an important reminder: our plans do change over time, so please don't rely on things happening according to today's particular snapshot of those plans.

  • OmniPlan v2 just went into beta, adding multi-user collaboration over the air (through Apple's MobileMe or our own Omni Sync Server, or your own private WebDAV server). For more about that, see last week's blog post. Once we wrap up this beta, we'll finally be ready to start on the last of our “iPad or Bust!” projects, OmniPlan for iPad.
  • Our free Omni Sync Server has been in beta since last summer, and it's been working quite well: over 18,000 people have signed up and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. This will remain a free service for all Omni customers when it leaves beta; if you haven't tried it already, I encourage you to give it a spin!
  • OmniGraphSketcher for Mac has a major update now in beta which adds support for log scales—important when you're trying to compare trends in data which might be orders of magnitude apart. We're also working on bringing that work over to the iPad app.
  • We're very close to submitting an update to OmniFocus for iPhone, adding the very popular Forecast view which was introduced in the iPad app. (Here's a screenshot.) Our test pilots found a few bugs around the edges that we need to squash before it's ready to ship, though, so it'll probably be another week or two before it's submitted (and another week after that before it's reviewed).
  • For OmniOutliner 4 for Mac we've taken apart our entire outline architecture, rebuilding it on top of more modern OS X infrastructure such as CoreAnimation and bindings. The rebuilt outline architecture from OmniOutliner 4 reached a major milestone last week with our public beta release of OmniPlan 2—and now that OmniOutliner for iPad has been submitted, we can focus more of our direct attention on OmniOutliner 4.
  • We're planning some major updates to OmniFocus for Mac, polishing up its user experience to match the ease of use and aesthetics of the iPad edition, adding the Forecast and Review modes which we introduced in the iPad app, and adding support for syncing projects with OmniPlan.
  • And finally, we're looking forward to updating our apps to take advantage of the new features Apple is introducing in Mac OS X Lion, such as the Versions autosave architecture, built-in Resume, and full-screen apps.

As always, I'd welcome any feedback you might have: leave a comment here or send me a message on twitter (where you'll find me at @kcase).

UPDATE: I just realized that I forgot to mention the price! OmniOutliner for iPad will be $19.99.

I only can say: congratulations. I know how hard you’ve been working, each day, and the result is awesome. This OmniOutliner is a new app, nothing in the App Store has the workflow so easy and clear.

This app is a MUST have if you use your iPad in the school, writing, brainstorming, checklist..

This app works and is fun.

The other side is that once you have it in your iPad you’ll miss it EVERYDAY in your iPhone :-) Maybe next year we could have it on our iPhones.

And the other updates sounds like you have work in progress and many things to do! Forecast in the iPhone! Amazing!! But no review mode, well, next I hope. I miss only the posibility to add a child in a task.

Update in the Omnifocus for Mac! Forecast and review and improve the user experience! Yeah!

The iPad is bringing great stuff to all Mac plataform.

Keep working OmniGroup! Thanks!

Awesome! I just realized that I’ve been using OmniOutliner for 10 years now. If OmniOutliner for iPad comes out on May 14, it will be my 10 year anniversary. :)

I mainly hope that you are working with the webkit mavens to fully implement DHTML.

I have not used a flat, linear “word processor” since I first “got it” using “More” on my 1984 original Mac.

But I don’t want to copy and paste my beautiful hierarchy into a 20th century, flatlander, linear piece of junk.

This needs to be end-to-end, native, open, cross-platform DHTML supported by any browser that can read OmniOutliner output tailored for HTML5.

It’s only then that broad adoption of the outline paradigm will overturn the tyranny of the Flatlanders.

As it stands I’m all alone in totally abandoning the flat paradigm so I have nobody on the receiving end with a copy of an OmniGroup product enabling them to view an elegant outline.

You are therefore nearing a growth ceiling. The general public just don’t get that “the index IS the document and the document IS the index. You should not limit you growth to a public of crusty old “More” evangelists like me.

I firmly trust that you business will expand logarithmically only when DHTML is seen everywhere educating the broad public to the painfully obvious (to us) advantages and elegance of the collapsable hierarchy.

Great on iPad OmniOuliner!! However I’d make the WebKit work priority over everything else you have lined up.

By the way, why doesn’t this feedback page window drag and scroll? I can’t move back up to see the beginning of what I wrote.

I’m dying! Thanks for the amazing work you’re doing. I know to us it’s taking forever, but only like it takes Christmas forever to arrive when you’re a kid. In reality, your speed has been astonishing! HURRY HURRY HURRY!!!! :-)

All I can say is finally! As a college student, Omnioutliner has become my favorite notetaking and drafting tool. I’ve been periodically checking (every other day) for updates since your Mac Expo video, and reading this makes me very happy. I was actually considering on getting a Macbook Air 11” because I don’t like carrying the heavier Pro around.

I hope the long wait was worth it.

I have eben patiently waiting for this and did not go to carbon fin. I tried it out but it’s not what I’m looking for. I want professional software, not something “that works”. So far omnipresent products have satisfied me a lot. More so than any other software I have used and I try a lot. I’m looking forward to outlined to see if it can accomplish one very important task: finally make me start writing my new book.

Will Omnioutliner on ipad have Dropbox integration?

Could you mention what features from the Mac version will not be in the iPad version?

Hi,
I enjoy OmniOutliner for iPod togehter with OmniOutliner on my Mac everyday.
Knowing, that OmniOutliner for iPad will come soon, its worth to think about a Ipad to replace my Ipod.

OH! Good question. Perhaps your sync server will do the job, but I’d love to see Dropbox integration for all the iOS apps!

I have to say this is the only iOS application i ever really wanted and I am very disappointed you guys saved the best for last. That said, all of your products are fantastic and I’ve been a longtime fan.

I’ve never been so excited for a piece of software! OmniFocus just became the application of this decade. *Wow*.

Guys, you are all wonderful people. Thank you for all of the software over the years and the continued support. You are all fantastic developers.

I can’t wait! I have been using OO for the last 3 years every day for my work outline and can’t work with out it and now having it on my iPad will make my life so much more productive. Please Apple approve it QUICKLY!!!

As has been raised in several previous comments, Dropbox integration is a must. My main disappointment with Omni’s excellent iPad apps to date is that they sync via iDisk rather than Dropbox (OmniFocus excepted from this - your sync server option there is excellent). iDisk is a pretty horrible solution for data syncing, which is why most people have moved on to Dropbox which just works. I find the lack of Dropbox support in apps like OmniGraffle a real stumbling block that make it that much more difficult to jump back and forth between the Mac and iPad versions. It’s much clumsier than it should be.

If you want some inspiration, take a look at how Dropbox has been implemented in iThoughts and iThoughts HD. The developer of those apps has really nailed it. You pull files off of Dropbox and then can synchronize all of your changes within the app on multiple files back to the server. There are visual indications for all of your files within the app to let you know their sync status. To me, that’s how things should be done.

If OmniOutliner is released without Dropbox support, I’ll really have to give it some thought as to whether it’s worth buying. There are so many writing apps now that sync flawlessly, that I’m just not willing to deal with MobileMe (I cancelled my subscription this year - not enough value for the money) or set up my own WebDav server. That just shouldn’t be a requirement in this day and age.

Don’t care for dropbox support - don’t care for hosting data on 3rd party servers (trust…). Give me generic WebDAV file access from all iOS apps, including the ability to synch desktop and iPad versions of a generic WebDAV drive…

Voop

05.06.11 3:57 PM

Voop, all the Omni document-based apps read and write to WebDAV as well as iDisk and iTunes document transfer.  You might have a bit of a wait if you want automatic sync of a disk volume, though.

Colum, Keith, Sterling, you should be able to access DropBox via DropDAV, once the DropDAV people get around to fixing their bugs.  The Omni Sync Server works fine with the other Omni apps, and isn’t limited to use with OmniFocus.

Use the Contact Omni feature from the app or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to get your requests into the development database.

OO for iPad is great. But since i bought my first iPhone I have hoped and waited for OO on iPhone. Will the iPad version run on iPhone? If not will you ever bring OO to iPhone?

If I may recommend something…you said your team was putting together screenshots etc. In my opinion that should not take that long. Unless you want to wait until apple approved the app I would put up info material asap to keep interest up/raise it while we wait for apple. If you say “we are working on screenshots”, knowing that everybody can take good screenshots in a few minutes and polish them in an hour, then you should, in my opinion, do it. Otherwise it looks odd.

Bill,
Thanks for the tip on DropDAV. Looking forward to this app. C

You know… I debated even buying the iPad when it first came out, and ironically, the two apps that were a deal-maker for me were OmniOutliner and OmniPlan. Once I heard that OmniGroup had committed to releasing the entire product line for the iPad, I made the decision to buy it. I was already content and happy with OmniFocus for iPhone, and was still able to use it, so I was quite happy, but eagerly awaiting OmniPlan and OmniOutliner… and yet, these are the last two being released, almost a year later!

I’m not complaining… just very, very eagerly anticipating… :) Keep up the great work guys… try not to dedicate your development efforts to any other platforms so that I won’t be motivated to buy those devices, too…...

Here’s another voice for direct Dropbox integration.

Dropbox is now the de-facto storage solution for iOS devices, since Apple has consistently failed to deliver a satisfactory experience on iDisk (I have both, but avoid the latter).

Why would I want to pay DropDAV to access my Dropbox data when all my other apps use the API to access directly? I don’t want to pay extra to access the service, and I don’t want to entrust a third party with my data security/connection.

One more vote for direct Dropbox integration.  All my other document-related apps have it, I couldn’t live without it, OmniOutliner needs it.
