iPad or Bust: 2 down, 3 to go!

by Ken Case on April 15, 2010

Two and a half months ago, I announced that we were planning to bring all five of our productivity apps to iPad.  Two weeks later, I wrote about some of the steps we were taking to make that happen.  Now that iPad has shipped, I thought it might be good to review where we are now, and what our plans are going forward:

As the above graphic indicates, we've already made some great progress: two apps down, three to go!

OmniGraffle and OmniGraphSketcher are available now: they both launched with the App Store, and they've both been very well received—with App Store ratings averaging four stars. Of course, those were just our 1.0 releases, and we're not standing still: OmniGraphSketcher 1.1 for iPad adds data import and is already available as a free App Store update, while OmniGraffle 1.1 improves performance and stability and overall user experience and will be submitted to Apple for review very soon.

Meanwhile, I'm sure many of you are wondering about the other three apps: OmniFocus, OmniOutliner, and OmniPlan. We're currently working on OmniFocus and OmniOutliner in parallel. OmniFocus has a bit of a head start, thanks to the work we'd already done in bringing it to iPhone, so we anticipate its iPad app will be ready in June. OmniOutliner is a little further out, and our current projection is that it will ship this summer. Finally, after we've shipped those four apps, we'll round out the set with OmniPlan for iPad which we're currently anticipating will ship sometime this fall.

So that's where our iPad apps are today, and where we're going! Thanks for taking the time to read this, and for all of your support: over these first two weeks OmniGraffle has sold several thousand copies, making it one of the top apps in the iPad App Store! We've had a pretty amazing journey so far, and we couldn't do it without you.

As always, I'd welcome any feedback you might have: leave a comment here or send me a message on twitter (where you'll find me at @kcase).

Thanks for the update! Exciting!! I’m loving Omnigraffle on the iPad thus far, and I know this is only the beginning. I’m sure you are aware of the much discussed ‘rebuying’ of apps available in both iPhone and iPad formats.

On that note, will Omnifocus be available as a ‘universal app’ - or will us previous owners (of the iPhone version) need to purchase another version?

Personally, I will likely opt to stay with only the iPhone version (which works extremely well for my needs) if the iPad variation will be a new purchase.

Again, thanks for the update and looking forward to the whole family of apps on iDevices!

Knowing how difficult it is to walk the tightrope between transparency and realistic caution when it comes to talking about future app development, I am hoping that you might be able to give us some general idea or even a tentative “screenshot” of the UI of OmniFocus for the iPad?  It would be great to get a glimpse as to whether it will be more similar than not to the current iPhone app (allowing, of course, for the extra real estate that the iPad makes possible and the tremendous new UI that it provides in general), or will it be even more of a rewrite that will make OmniFocus on the iPad a truly unique experience?  It seems that some apps were developed absent hardware and so really don’t take full advantage of the iPad, while others, now that the hardware is actually available, are taking the time to really develop a new look and feel for their apps that results in a new and totally awesome experience, like having a trusted old friend in a new form on a dynamic new UI.  I hope the fact that OmniFocus is rolling out in June means that we can anticipate yet another brilliant step forward as this trusted app takes up residence on the iPad!  Anyway, whatever kind of “sneak peak” you might be able to give us would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone at OmniGroup for your inspired work on your whole family of apps!

Will OmniOutliner be an iPad only app or also run on the iPhone/iTouch?

I was hugely disappointed when OmniFocus wasn’t available for the iPad since I’d been using both the desktop and iPhone versions from day one. However, that forced me to take a look at Things. And now I’m actually glad that OmniFocus was not ready for the iPad. Things on the iPad is very nicely done. And I’ve also discovered Evernote while looking for OmniFocus alternatives.

Don’t get me wrong, I still use OmniFocus and will continue to do so - only just as a very handy searchable database that syncs among all my devices. So I’m definitely looking forward to the iPad release that takes advantage of the increased screen real estate. I just won’t be using OmniFocus as a GTD app anymore.

Keep up the great work!

Are there any plans to include some kind of sync service for OmniOutliner? OO on the Mac has become my go-to app for sketching out textual ideas (I use OmniGraffle for visual stuff). I can’t wait to see OO on the iPad, but only if I have a seamless way to sync docs between both platforms.  The iWork apps are really well-done but feel crippled by only having email as a way to get docs on and off of the device. I’d love to see you guys do one better.

Keep up the great work!

I am waiting for the 3G iPad to come out, and plan to purchase one, to see how it does with OmniFocus, the iPhone version. If it works well, prior to being iPad specific, I plan to purchase 4 or 6 more. My main concern is that it will change a lot from the iPhone and Desktop versions. I do like the recent iPhone update which added some great features. One feature that would be nice on the iPad is the ability to drag and drop, so that I can move tasks to different folders, as well as indent or unindent, if that is a word. If that feature, or the total library view could be added to the iPad, that would be awesome. That would eliminate the need to drill down into each project, but would give me an overview.

I’m using OmniFocus in a manufacturing setting, with many jobs going at once, so to be able to see everything at once, is great.

When OmniPlan comes to the iPad…will it be more integrated with OmniFocus as has been talked about in the past?  It seems that if you’re writing OF and OP for the iPad from scratch, now would be a good time to offer integration.

I use OF, OG, and OO on my Mac and OF on my iPhone.  I would take advantage of OP if there was integration with OF…just waiting for that day to send more of my cash to Omni.

I am thrilled to hear about the OF and OO plans for the iPad.

I depend on OF soooo much.  Yes, I wish it had been available on day for the iPad, but I commend you for not rushing it. Take the time to make it the excellent product it is on the Mac and the iPhone.  I have looked at other GtD solutions, such as Things, etc., many of which are pretty good.  But OF has the best combination of features *and* the best syncing across machines/cloud.  So, kudos for doing it right and planning it well. A big thank you.

Can’t wait to have OO on the iPad too.  Yay! :-)

You have a typo in your article: you left out the part where you are porting OmniWeb! It’s okay, everyone makes mistakes, just bringing it to your attention…

Does Omnifocus for iPhone work well on iPad? And do you plan to do a special discount for people wh’ve already bought both Omnifocus for Mac & iPhone?

Great products! All I ask is that you make the iPad/iPhone apps universal PLEASE. I would appreciate not having to pay two or three times for the same software.

Mike

04.17.10 1:46 PM

Mike, you aren’t paying two or three times for the same software, any more than you are when you get an iPod version of a Mac application such as OmniFocus.  OmniFocus for the iPad is going to be a brand-new application built for the iPad, not just OmniFocus for the iPhone in a larger form factor.

Don’t have my iPad yet (birthday is 2 weeks away!), but I very much indeed look forward to iPad version of Focus, Outliner & Plan.

I understand the amount of work involved in bringing these applications to the iPad, my question is… are you going to have any kind of deal for us loyal Omni Groupies?

I love OmniFocus, and reality is I’ll probably buy it even if you charge “full fare”, but it kinda sucks thinking I will have bought the “same program” three times.

Keep up the awesome work.

@Jean-Marc in my experience, OF on the iPad *works*, but like every other iPhone app it looks really ugly. I’ll survive with that until the native version comes out, but I think few people who use OF a lot will be happy until then.

I hope you’re reading those comments on the App Store—- the star ratings don’t tell it all. Even some of the five star reviews admit that OmniGraffle 1.0 has some performance issues, but the buyers believe in the “potential” of the app and are rating it high anyway.

As a long time Omni Group customer, I believe this will be one of the killer apps on the iPad, too, but I’m waiting until the reviews improve before I’ll bet $50 on it. Hopefully the performance fixes in 1.1 will be convincing. I do appreciate that developers were in a tough position to optimize their apps, when almost nobody had iPad hardware in-hand when the iPad app store went online.

I’m looking forward to a real OmniFocus experience on the iPad, including a more intuitive interface that parallels apps like EverNote. I would even like to have the iPhone app with higher res graphics and fonts as an intermediate option. I, too, hope that as a Mac/iPhone OF owner that I won’t have to pay yet again for the iPad version!

I’ve been using OF for a a while now, and love it on my Mac and iPhone.

The iPhone app on the iPad is ok for now, but I’m really looking forward to a real iPad app. Every time I start OF on my iPad, I can’t help but imagine all the useful things I could be doing if the app really took advantage of the format. Can’t wait for the app.

I’m with Rob B. Need Beta testers? I’d be happy to help.

Thanks,
-Adam

PS: I now have Mac/iPhone/iPad all syncing flawlessly together (anyone who needs it, iCloud has a free WebDav service that works great with OF on all platforms).

I’m still waiting on my iPad so I’ve not bought anything yet. I second the motion of those who suggest that Omnifocus become a universal app. At the time I bought OF, it was one of the more expensive apps. As good as it was (is), I don’t think it was worth the $19 I paid for it. That being said, I think that OO will be a killer app for the pad, probably better than it is on the Mac.

One issue I have is pricing. I know that Omnigroup makes the best products. I’ve paid for many of them, even their web browser. I believe they need a marketing strategy for their products if they wish to keep up. Premium pricing is great, but there is a limit to what people will pay. I’ve held off on OG 5 because version 4 worked fine and the enhancements weren’t worth the steep upgrade price. That is especially true if I’m having (needing) to purchase multiple copies for all my toys.

The long and the short of it is that I can only spend what I have to spend and sometimes a few fast quarters beat a slow dollar. I’m not against Omnigroup making a tidy profit, but the cost of products has really increased when you consider the cost of feedomg multiple toys.

I am a convinced enthusiast for Omni software, owning Graffle, Focus, and Plan, and using all of the above plus Outliner at work, and can’t wait to try out the iPad versions (mine is waiting at home for me when I return from business travel tomorrow). Let me echo the others here and say that above all I am waiting for OmniFocus for the iPad. Of all the Omni apps I use, that one has made a significant and profound impact on my work life (and personal life to an extent), and it seems iPad is a natural home for it. In fact, OF might be most valuable on a platform like iPad. Keep up the good work Omni!

I live out of Omni-Outliner. I use it for film scheduling and story structuring. There’s nothing quite like it. If it was out for the iPad now I’d be using it tomorrow.

Just throwing my 2c in, when Omni Outliner comes out on the iPad i will be all over it, it’s my number one missing app ATM.  I love it on the desktop, just make sure there is some sort of syncing in there or else it’s almost useless!

Omnifocus was the app that sold GTD to me.

I would really like it if the Ipod/Iphone version could synch via bluetooth with the iPad version.  I use my Ipod for carrying around with me and often get new tasks to my inbox as they occur.  However, being a windows user, I have missed out on a lot of the neat features of the Mac version.  If I could bluetooth synch to the iPad, and that version had more of the Mac features… why, that would just make my day.

Hi, I very much like the idea of OG on iPad, I feel the platform is perfectly suited to it, and am seriously considering doing a lot of graphing and charting on the device. However, being able to do that is contingent on being able to export the data back into my usual workflow. What are the plans for future file format export like? Will you support Visio or Expression interoperability?

Jerome

ready to work with omnioutline(beta).... I’m currently using the Outliner (CarbonFin) app which exports to opml and emailing stuff to myself… and then using opml to import into outliner from OO3 files.

I received my iPad and promptly loaded it up. I purchased Omnigraffle along with iWorks. I like OG although I’ve not really put it through it’s paces.

I found a bug with Omnifocus, it won’t recognize 3G Internet, only WiFi. I was surprised since it had been out for the iPhone for such a long time. maybe it’s the difference between the data plans. At any rate I’m looking forward to more iPad apps. The iPad is a great device and I’m glad Omni is doubling down.

I was excited about the software being available but unfortunately OmniGroup has a history of high prices in software.

The Mac software is a little high for the market (OmniGraffle Pro) but the iPhone software (OmniFocus) is very expensive and the iPad software (OmniGraffle) is priced out of the market.

While OmniFocus is among some of the highest price software on the iPhone.  I really like it but after sinking some $100 for the Mac and the iPhone software, I would not rave about it.  Still a bunch of bugs in the iPhone version and no fixes in sight.  Funky operations in the Mac version and no updates since I bought it.

At double the price of Pages or Keynote I **might** consider OmniGraffle Pro (they are smaller, having pity on the developers).  At 5 times the price, definitely not. I just don’t need it that bad. And on the Mac, it will be a long time before I buy an update.

With these prices, will people take you seriously, yes. With these prices will you take over the market for the given application types, nope.

I’ll pass on OmniGraffle iPad ‘gold-pressed latinum edition’. I just don’t need it that bad with what I can do in Keynote at 1/5th the price. Purchasing iWork (the entire suite) is just a no brainer.

The question is : would you sell 5X more at $9.99? I bet you would sell 20X and your fans (present company included) would not hesitate to help you. It would help sell the fairly stiff priced OmniGraffle Pro as well…

Already using OmniFocus on my iPad. It syncs way faster than my iPhone 3G does. :-D

I can’t wait for the iPad verison, and how it will take advantage of the bigger screen real estate. And looking forward to OmniOutliner too.

Hi. I’ve been a long OF user. Yesterday I mailed support some questions about OO and OF for iPad, and I received an answer telling me to look at this forum.
Here I am, but -unless I’m missing something- I could only find many users adding questions and no answers.

I know that OmniGroup support was always great. They are writing about that everywhere. (I hope it’s not changing, but it certainly looks like it).

Dragon, sorry for the confusion here! This is our company blog; our forums are actually over here. We interact with customers in both places, but blogs are by their nature a bit less interactive than a forum.

It looks like your support mail included a question about the status of OmniOutliner for iPad or iPhone; our response included a link to this article because it was written by our CEO about that subject. Please accept our apologies if there was any misunderstanding.

I’m a long time Omnigraffle customer. Although I paid 49 bucks for the iPad version of Omnigraffle, I think loyal customers should get discounts for the next apps released. I know it takes time to code but I’m loyal and sharing my ipad with colleagues on how cool your stuff is (I’m an influencer marketing your product) can you make it cheap for me to do that please??

I’ll second Mr. Miller’s comment.  Where is the petition to sign for Omniweb for iPad?  Seriously, I’m not kidding.  Mobile Safari works fine but lack the customizability of any desktop browser, let alone Omniweb.  I’d pay $20 for a port.

OO before OF ... PLEASE. I live in OO.

05.04.10 11:16 PM

Eddie, unfortunately the App Store system doesn’t have any support for discounts based on purchase history; all it lets us do is set one price for everyone.

We’ve let Apple know that we’d like to see some more pricing options supported, and we’re hopeful that they’ll be added at some point, though…

Brian

I am annoyed to hell about people who complain that Omnifocus is too expensive. For less than the price of dinner for two you get an incredibly valuable piece of software. Get some perspective.
