Q & A with Omni

by Linda Sharps on October 30, 2006

I was trying to think of some exciting Omni news to share with you, and I found myself writing up a post that told you all about how our snack room fridge magnets currently spell out “FAMOUS LIPIDS” and what could that mean, and then I had to look up “lipids” because I wasn't sure what they were, and then I got distracted by wikipedia when I learned the daily requirement of lipids is 382 grams per day, which made me wonder if I am getting enough lipids, whatever they are, and then I decided that if those Halloween-sized “100 Grand” bars contain any lipids at all, I'm probably doing JIM FLIPPING DANDY in the lipid department.

Also, maybe I should cut back on the sugar for a while.

Anyway! Obviously it would be totally unprofessional and lame to post some kind of crazy blog entry about lipids, so instead I thought I'd offer up the chance for you to ask us questions – from “how do I get OmniWeb to do X” to “jeez, just how many cats do you people have” – and I'll do my best to get them answered and posted here throughout the week.

Ready? Go ahead, ask away. I'll just be, um, making absolutely sure that I've got all my lipids for the day week month year.

How can I get OmniWeb to open up RSS links in Vienna, my preferred RSS reader? It's really annoying to have to copy the link, open up Vienna, click New Subscription, and paste it in, when with Safari I just click the link and poof.

So, I have professional OmniOmni licences[1].  I keep them on my laptop because it's mine and so

are the licenses.

My employer gave me a PowerMac to use[2] and I'd like to use those same Omni applications with network licensing.

How do I get network licensing?

Does it hurt?

Can you get it from touching things and

sticking your fingers in your mouth?

Cheers,

Matthew

[1] Well, except for OmniPlan & OmniFocus & OmniObjectMeter.

[2]  OK, they didn't give it to me.  It's just been sitting

in a lab for 2 years unused and I'm a little sick

of Solaris.

Are there any “secret” ways to get OmniWeb to run quicker? Thanks.

So many questions:

- When is OmniFocus coming out and who do I have to kill to be on the beta?

- Are you worried about all the other “Omni” products and companies?

- Can you give us some hints about OmniWeb 6.0?

- Do you like it when we call you guys “OmniDudes”?

382g of lipids a day will see you sporting a massive arse in a relatively short space of time. You might want to revise downards (like less than half ;-)

Here are a few:

- What's planned for OmniWeb 5.6

- When will a beta be out of the door

- What about OmniFocus?? No beta in sight??

- Why didn't you guys make Oni Universal Binary ;-)

- How many cats do you guys have?

- Are cat hair a problem in your computers?? Don't they get absolutely everywhere?

PS: the amount of lipid is one thing, the type of lipid really matters actually. Some do a lot more harm to your system than others, eg: transfat are not your friends… You need 0 grams of transfat a day as far as I understand it. They should be on top of the bioterror list of Homeland Security (they sure kill a lot more people than anthrax :-> )

Tell us a little bit about OmniFocus.  You're up against some competition here—Midnight Inbox probably comes the closest to what you're doing.  The GTD system gives you breathing room to be implemented in a few different ways, but aside from interface stuff I don't really see how your product can distinguish itself from its competitors in the market.  How will OmniFocus be different?

And, to echo BZ: When's the beta?  Got any screenshots?

And: just how many cats DO you have?

Are LipIDs anything like RFIDs?

Seems weird that Omnigroup would assign IDs to their employees lips, but maybe it's part of the new OmniSecurity.  I mean, I've heard about lip-readers, but this seems over the top.

PS: Can one buy a single license for the OmniGroup OmniBus?  If so would that be a VW or a London DoubleDecker?

I'm playing through Oni at the moment, and I've found a few bugs. If I report them, do they have a chance of ever being fixed?

Here's a few:

OmniWeb and ad blocking:

1) Can I get the rollover graphic to go away when I roll over hidden ads in OmniWeb?

2) Is there any easy way to import the giant ad filter syntaxes for Firefox's AdBlock into something OmniWeb can use?

3) Why doesn't it seem to work to filter flash ads in OmniWeb unless I block ALL flash ads (block *.swf)?

OmniGraffle:

1) I drew something backwards. What's the easiest way to flip horizontally and get it back into OmniGraffle?

2) I want to put some nice text into an OG document. How do I go about setting up columns?

3) Is there an easy way to include bulleted lists in OG?

OmniOutliner:

1) What the heck is up with the sync domain objects in the Applescript dictionary? Why would I want to use them?

2) Why can't I clone entries, huh? WHY, DAMN YOU?! WHYYYYY?!

3) Is it possible to save an OmniOutliner document so that it's JUST the XML file and doesn't have the bundle “wrapper” around it? (Then I could check it into source control and stuff.)

Is omnifocus anywhere near coming out? I know you want to make sure it has omni quality before letting it out of the bag, but I've got my money ready and I need a gtd app yesterday. I'll only be able to wait so long before turning elsewhere, and I doubt I'll look back. Of course, if you let me be a beta tester for omni focus you'll have my undying love :)

At the Woodland Park Zoo here in Seattle there is a great poison dart frog exhibit in the tropical rain-forest building. I noticed once that there was a plaque that claimed some OMNI company donated a bunch of money for that exhibit.

Was that you guys? If so, good job. My kids and I love to checking-up on the frogs on our regular zoo trips.

* Are all of your cats licensed or do you support pirate cats?

* Do any of your cats, pirate or otherwise, wear eye patches?

* Have you ever tried 'upgrading' one of your cats?

Hm. Can't seem to comment on the answers.

So you're not going to comment on Corentin's question about Oni becoming a Universal binary? That means that your working on it right?

I mean, you released the OS X port of the game less than 50 moons ago.

I think that's right. Never been to good at the English system of measurement. Metric all the way!

“When is OmniFocus coming out and who do I have to kill to be on the beta?”

I second that question!  I think that Omni is the only company whose product announcements (or previews) are even remotely as exciting as Apple's. ;-)

Is there any sort of official list of ideas and feature requests for future releases?  Have you ever thought of doing something like an “OmniProduct Focus Group,” or is this something that would be completely unnecessary?

Dan Carlson

To ask a different question, is there a story for the change in the status of Omni's apps that come bundled with most Macs, with the switch to Intel?  (Specifically, the addition of OmniOutliner to all consumer Macs and the loss of OmniGraffle.)  How'd you guys get to have OmniApps bundled in the first place, if it was more than just making stuff that's that awesome?

Dan Carlson

Thanks so much for the response. I was expecting my question to be deemed less important than the lipid-licious ones. How bout I'll start counting up from 1.0.0 to 5.5.2 and then you'll release it?

Richard Neal

Any chance of transferring an Outliner license to Focus when it comes out? Waiting isn't much fun, and the Kinkless solution is nice. Of course, paying twice isn't much fine either.

Can I resize multiple columns (at the same time) within oo so they are the same size?

Hopefully it's not too late to add a question.

How do I enter curved text in OmniGraffle?  That is, if I want a line of text to follow a curved path (like a squiggle or around a circle/arc), can it be done, or do I need to fire up something like Illustrator (which I don't have) and copy/paste EPS stuff?

In a less tech-supporty and more, um,  philosophical vein: many Mac developers have moved away from the use of drawers (especially now that Apple has taken them away from Mail) but you guys still feature drawers-a-plenty. What do you like about drawers? Have you thought about any other ways of implementing the functionality that drawers give you?

remark concerning OmniOutliner: when a file or an image is attached, it is embedded in the OO document/archive with a randomly generated name (I believe). Could you make sure that the characters that form this filename are compliant with Windows systems? Sometimes, I copy some files to Windows, and OO documents fails to copy because the random name of the attached file contain some characters that Windows dont like. Thanks!

I see the OmniOutliner works OK with subversion from a previous comment. (Actually I do this all the time, some times embedded graphics that have been deleted give me trouble though as SVN want to hang on to them.) However, I have had no luck at all with storing OmniGraffle documents in Subverson.  The icon seems to contain an illegal character or something. ( '0x0d' in path '/Users/sam/safe2/Projects/CourseWare/JavaClassRefactored/diagrams/testing-the-ui.graffle/Icon)

Ideally, at least in my ideal world, Omni products that have documents would support SVN the way VoodooPad does. I jave have to pick “Subversion Commit” and I am done. I don't need the add, delete or other svn controls in the app itself as I can manage that elsewhere,  just commit.

Thanks for the consideration.

Can you tell me if OmniFocus will liason with OmniPlan so that you can plan projects in OmniPlan and then download your personal tasks into OmniFocus? Also, are there any plans to allow Wintel users to edit OmniPlan? I work in a mixed-platform office and, while I do most of the project planning on my mac, it would be nice to enable other employees to check off tasks, etc.

Do you guys plan on fixing RSS anytime soon? Its a sometimes it work, sometimes it doesn't work symptom. Usually I have to relaunch OmniWeb to get it to recheck RSS feeds- it doesn't do it by itself even though I have it set to recheck the feeds every hour.

OmniMail! Kidding, I know that ship has sailed.

What about a fax program?

Database? Filemaker's sloppy since it has no competition.

You are not the only one loving this ‘fob off the hard questions on other Omni employees’ gig - at the very least I am too, as I got a cool, useful answer to my last poser - which I really appreciate.  So cool, infact, I think I'll ask another one (at the risk of wearing out my welcome).  In OmniOutliner, it is rather easy to inadvertently past graphic images into outline in TIFF format. Seems like the Mac clipboard favors TIFFS or something (Apple's Grab utility definitely does).  Anyway, this is all fine until you try to export your outline to HTML. (I use dynamic HTML) What happens then is the pasted graphic gets output as a TIFF. Even this is OK as long as you browse the output in Safari (I know, boo hiss - I bought an OmniWeb license) because Safari supports TIFF images. However, you guessed it, neither MS Exploder and FireFox render TIFF images. I found this our the hard and painful way - I exported a dynamic html page for a class I am teaching. Sadly, few of the students are using Macs and when they tried to view the output, I looked dumb and felt it. Anyway, long story short: the ability / option to convert TIFF to JPG (or any commonly support image format on the web) when generating HTML from outlines would most welcome. Making sure a pasted graphic is not in TIFF format is a real pain.  Thanks in advance.

Spencer-

This is an issue we're aware of and we'll see if we can address it in OO4. The best thing to do for now is to avoid copying and pasting directly and only attach files that you've already saved in a web friendly format. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Derek

So what is the story behind the OmniWeb nailgun?

11.08.06 2:46 AM

Hi Nik-

If you're referring to the conduit setting domain class, that is a fairly advanced feature that is used for things like kgtd syncing. If you have questions about how to use it, send an email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and we can go into more detail.

We do plan to add cloning for OO4. It's coming!
