OmniWeb 5.8 Final has emerged!

Posted by Troy on 09.26.08 @ 4:03 AM File Under: News, OmniWeb, Releases

It's been available as a sneaky peek release for some time now. Well, we decided it was time to make a final release and share it with the non sneaky peek world. OmniWeb 5.8 is based on the same version of WebKit in use by Safari 3.1.x and shares the same features and security enhancements. We also snuck in a few other small bug fixes as well as additional tweaking to the toolbar icons, see the complete release notes for more details and download links.

Congrats.  Still the best OS X browser without a doubt.  The site specific prefs and visual tabs seal the deal.

But fergawdsakes, put some work into matching Safari in terms of the cool inline search feature and the Spotlight history feature.

I heart Omnigroup, but don't forget to keep improving your crown jewel.

And as long as I'm ranting, I love the resizable text entry field feature.  I know about the hidden pref to enable it, but I've got to imagine that there are folks less clued in than me who would be able to discover it if you included it in the Prefs dialog…

You snuck in a few more bug fixes? It's called uploading to Trunk and you folks know it. I wouldn't brag about adding bug fixes while not uploading back to Trunk.

Very classless and something I'd never expect from Omni seeing as they rely on WebKit for their browser to even render a damn page.

I wouldn't care if they were still using their own engine, but then again the point wouldn't exist if you did.

    Marc,

Other than integrating the latest WebKit, the fixes we made in this release were in OmniWeb-specific code, not in WebKit itself.  We do publish our WebKit patches on a regular basis.

    Sorry for any confusion!

Carla Bruni was looking over my shoulder as I was browsing in OmniWeb.  She kept making little noises when I did something cool.  Next thing I know she was kind of leaning up against me.  Then I made the mistake of hitting Cmd-F.  “Ick,” she says, pulling away.  Starts looking at her watch.  “I really need to get going…”

The other day, my girlfriend left the state for three months, and I had just done a search in omniweb that day. True story.
