OmniWeb 5.7 beta 2 released!

by Troy on March 24, 2008

OmniWeb 5.7 now has a second beta with a few changes that we hope many will find useful. First if you like your OmniWeb in something other than English, our generous volunteers have given us updates to both the French and Chinese localizations. Regardless of the language you speak, we've also fixed a crash that could occur when pressing undo after closing a tab. Enjoy beta 2!

Still useless to me without syncing with Safari bookmarks. Safari bookmarks is a plist. I can view it in Textedit. Why can't I see them in OmniWeb? I haven't used OW since I bought my iPhone June 29th of last year because of the bookmark syncing capabilities of it.

Unhappy *paid* customer. And I've been a paying customer since the OS X Public Beta. Shoot. I'd pay $100US *today* to get that capability.

Oh well. I'll wait until the next release. I'll see if that disappoints as well.

I'm aware of the import features, just not something I want to do every day when I get home for the evening you know? I'm out and about most of the day, and I spend about 4 of those hours on my iPhone surfing. Nothing important. Just killing time.

I save pages to Mobile Safari throughout the day that I want to spend more time on that night. So I save them to a bookmark folder I call “Check out later.” I check them out that night, or whenever I get to them. So mostly, it's a one way ticket. Mobile Safari to Safari.

A more efficient way than using the import feature (at least in my opinion) is to use the free utility called AllBookmarks ( http://www.allbrowserbookmarks.com ). I'm somewhat of a perfectionist. This seems like an ideal solution, but I just don't like using it. I want my solution to be within OmniWeb. Maybe you guys can analyze it a little and see how it keeps itself able to refresh bookmarks in Safari. Maybe I'll swallow my pride and use AllBookmarks.

When… when will the UI get a “real” update? I think a couple years ago you guys pioneered a great new tabbing structure, but the innovation in OmniWeb stopped there. You guys make some other really great products but I'm not impressed by Omniweb. In fact I'm disappointed. It's sad really, cuz I've always wanted to make it my primary browser but just never could.

Have you fixed the memory leak yet?

I am a paid user of OmniWeb, since the early v4 days.  However, the last few versions have been disappointing.  The 5.5 version doesn't work well in Leopard and the 5.6 version just eats memory while I'm using it; the memory usage on my system steadily climbs as I use the browser, and is not released until I quit the application because I start to get pageouts until I quit OW.

I've gone back to Safari for now until this issue is fixed.  I also want the ability to keep my bookmarks synched between OW and Safari.  Once these two issues have been addressed, I will come back to OmniWeb.
