OmniWeb 5.6 Sneaky Peeks are now available!

by Troy on June 27, 2007

Hi OmniWeb, we let you sit in the corner for a little too long, sorry about that. The fine folks at WebKit.org have been doing some amazing work and we thought you might like to play with it. Come out of the corner, stretch your legs and lets see how things go!

After your time away, I hope you'll get along better with JavaScript and plug-ins like Speed Download. Not to mention all those random sites that you just didn't see eye to eye with. We promise to help you along the way but in the meantime why don't you head on over to the Sneaky Peek page we made up for you.

..and why buy this when the best web browsers out there are free?? Firefox, IE, Safari… how do you standout against these monster browsers? well, make it ALSO free. you might be the next best browser featured in a magazine! people love free stuffs. if this is free, then people will love you.

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Now I need to check what needs to be done for the localization too… :-|

MAN, FINALLY!

I thought you guys forgot you had this product! I switched to two other browsers in the meantime, here's hoping for the best. ;)

Corentin: I don't *think* anything has changed in the UI… I tried really hard to keep things stable, so there shouldn't be any new work for ya! :D

The widgets *do* look better than before. And the annoying text behavior in the search box is gone.

Oh…and then there is the whole “ridiculously fast” thing.

You guys really did a great job with this. Onto OmniWeb 6! :)

I disagree with Steve, people will continue buying your browser, because it is hands-down the best out there.

Rachael: This is great news indeed :-) All the goodness of a new version without even having to work for it (well, for the localization at least ;-) ).

Thanks!

The thing I am missing still is del.icio.us integration. That's the only reason I stick to FF.

I strongly disagree with Steve. I've worked with Safari (2.x builds are slow, lacking so convenient features like the Workspaces), Firefox (I believe the Mac port of this app has been flubbed severely), Opera (feels as a foreign object in my hands). The OmniWeb is hands-down full-fledged browser with the very best UI ever. I love the Workspaces (can't work without them). To me, OmniWeb has become a top-notch standard. Sure it's buggy (JavaScript issues on 5.5.4), but it's so ergonomic. There's no real competition for this product, aparat from Safari 3.0 so extensively integrated with the Leopard. Paying the mere twenty-sth bucks is defintiely justifiable, at least it was in my case.

They always say you get what you pay for and OmniWeb is well worth it!! The best mac browser, period.

I disagree !

I buy Omniweb, because it's nice, good and has great features.

hoping to a future omniweb 6 with the best of new ideas of safari 3 and firefox anti-pub and others ideas from Omnigroup.

I guess my incessant whining finally paid off.

Oooh, shiny.

Are you making any money off Google searches yet, like Safari?

See “Safari for Windows” section.

It looks like you aren't (at least on my 5.5), but I may have changed a setting somewhere…

The app-cast download links don't work.

Just wanted to add another thanks; the sites I had been having so much trouble with in 5.5 (mostly newspaper classified sites, where I would need to search for RFQ/RFP information for clients) has been fixed—the search works fine now. Thanks Joel & Co., it's great not to have to open Firefox for just these couple of sites.

And to the initial comment in the thread; I gladly paid for OW and would do it again. It's still the browser I recommend to all Mac users I consult to.

Great stuff. As always - my first choice browser. To make it perfect… two requests: a search system like Safari 3's; a “mail contents of page” like Apple-I in Safari.

Could somebody tell me how to use the web inspector? I can't find it.

So what is new with OW 5.6, besides updating the WebKit?  But I am glad to see that development has returned!

Now, just add some extra toolbar buttons (New Tab, New Window), and add a few extra features that are in Safari 2 & 3 such as ...

1) Privacy Browsing

2) Reset Browser

3) In-line find (great feature back from Firefox 0.9.x and now Safari 3!)

Oh, and here I had just switched to Firefox this very day because of a certain bug. Nice to see my favourite browser back.

OT, but Microsoft seems be a pretty big fan of OmniWeb's icon.

At least OmniGroup isn't getting ripped off to the extent that Panic! is.

5.5.x (german) has no problems showing them!

I'm a bit confused about the OmniWeb strategy. It seems like this product has the potential to be the “loss leader” for OmniGroup.

You guys have so many terrific products that must be generating significant revenue. Why not make the web browser free and use it to attract interest to your other (better) products.  As much as I like OmniWeb, I refuse to pay for it, because I view it as another form of vendor lock-in (even at the low price). Who is going to build meaningful plugins for it a la Firefox (or even Safari)?

What the community needs is a standards-compliant browser like Firefox with the user experience of Safari/OmniWeb (both of which need tons of improvement in terms of standards compliance, especially their JavaScript/ECMAScript implementations). Sadly, OmniGroup et al seems resigned to “leaving it to Apple”.

Good luck, Guys.

I preferred Omniweb because it was a commercial, really supported, innovative browser from a group like Omni back in time when it was $30 or something.

Still glad about that decision. Keep up the good work and actually caring about your users Omni Group!

A little PS/Tip for Alpha testers, while trying Sneaky Peek, go to Software Update preferences of browser (Omniweb) and set it to check updates DAILY rather than weekly default. It really checks daily, e.g. it won't check 30 times if you reboot 30 times unlike amateurly written applications.

I'm more excited about the next version of OmniWeb than I am about the Transformers movie.  I know OmniWeb won't be disappointing.

I would really like to see a “new tab” button that you can put in the main toolbar.  I never saw anything like that anywhere.  It would be really cool to see some updated icons or be able to customize them (similar to firefox) Just somethings that would make me want to buy it.

OmniWeb is an excellent browser. I have had crashes over the last several months and I am not 100% pleased with things, but the look and feel and workmanship of the programming is first-rate.

Anyone who complains about having to pay for it is more than welcome to sponge off other people's efforts. But OmniGroup has been upfront fron the get-go and that is the way of things.

They deserve to be paid for their efforts and credited for their integrity. Don't like it…? There's always Internet Explorer 5.2.3 waiting to be downloaded for free from the Crypt of Death - have fun with that, eh!

Some things are absolutely worth paying for. Peace of Mind. True Inspiration. Innovative Hard Work. Anything That Cuts Off Microsoft.

We have a family license and use OmniWeb along with Safari 3.0, and, less and less, Firefox. Opera? No thanks.

I suggest that you also look at the new shiira browser (v. 2.1) and try to integrate some of it's features.
