Yet another terrific piece of work by the Omni gang.  I have a number of curricular projects planned for the summer and fall term.  OmniPlan will be the tool that I use—and I will be among those first in line to purchase it.  I appreciate the fact that you've provided an educational purchase price for those of us in education.

Congratulations.  I would love to have some sample plan files just to get a better feel for what's possible for this.  The ones used in the screenshots would be good.

Project managment from Omni, that sounds pretty cool! Although I'm a bit dissapointed that it goes the way of the Gantt charts. Reminds me too much of the “Microsoft Project” style of management. While Microsoft din't invent that style of management, it tends to lead down that way of doing things. Wish that somethig a little more innovative could have been designed.

But regardless looks like a fanstastic app, and will definitely give it a go. Too bad I already have invested into Basecamp. Unless… this ends up becoming a fantastic front end to Basecamp, and I can sync and publish everything in OmniPlan with my Basecamp site(hint, hint). That will make me jump up and and down with giddy joy.

Hey OmniGang—

This, as with all your other 'stuff' which I proudly own, will be awesome. In fact I will buy now - when available.

My first feed back:

Downloaded.

Installed.

Opened OmniPlan.

Tried to save new document.

Spinning Beach Ball of Death.

After 5-7 minutes, force quit.

Repeat.

Same.

Repeat.

Same.

I cannot create, nor save any plan. Just hangs.

Unless of course, as a beta, your not allowing the saving of project files.

But, with that said—this app is going to rock. Thank you for bringing this to the Mac market.

Mac OSX 10.4.7

1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 (Mac Mini)

1 GB DDR SDRAM

Thanks in advance!

Regarding the problem with the beach ball on save, moving the app to (main) Applications folder appears to resolve it. I duplicated the problem by placing the app on the desktop but unable to duplication while the app is the Applications folder.

S Commuri—

Thank you for the advice. OmniPlan was properly installed into the (main) Application folder. And I am able to duplicate the problem of the SBBOD even if I re-download and re-install. I appreciate your response. Thank you.

Hi,

I downloaded the disk image, and saved the App to /Applications, then ran it. I created a project and tried to save it to ~/Documents/Projects/Driving.omniplan but have the same problem as Hal, Spinning Pizza of Death, no save.

This is the most excited that I have been about a new app in a while! Maybe ever. I use Graffle and Outliner Pro all the time and can't wait to spend some more time with omniplan.

That said, it's too bad that the save doesn't seem to work. I had the same fatal hang.

Installed in Application folder within another folder called Omniplan. Saved to default documents folder. Spinning rainbow disc. Force quit.

Hey folks, thanks for the comments. If you're having troubles, make sure to use the Send Feedback command in the Help menu. Bug reports sent there will get way more attention than ones posted on the blog. :D

Great thought. But, OmniPlan hangs and will not respond to the Send Feedback command in the Help menu.

We just posted beta 3, which should fix the hang-on-save problem.

Hi,

1b3 looks good - no problems saving files.

$150 is a bit higher than I was expecting [higher than pmx, itrax, merlin, for instance], but i suppose a pro-app wouldn't be cheap.

Might have been good to have a cut-down version for $80, same as OmniGraffle.

The guy at resexcellence switched away from the mac because of a bad experiences with the community. So let me take this opportunity to say:

I love you guys!

I like the fact that it imports files from MS Project, I'll try this feature tonight.

I'm a bit closer now to using a mac at work ;)

I'm going to give it a go, but I think the $150 price tag will cause marital strain! (I bought the Pro versions of OO3 and OG!) Still, I'm a one-man-band in a PC environment so it probably isn't going to be an essential purchase. Now, what about OmniGetitdone?

An interesting first incarnation. I do think it's fair to say, though, that the available functionality makes this suitable for small projects only. Programme management via this tool is a non starter. With this in mind, how a licence fee of $150 can be justified I have no idea. Compared to Merlin this is a mere, unproven infant yet it will cost more. How strange… The current sales pitch is contradictory, I'm afraid. It's nowhere near being a professional application yet. The plus point so far for me, though, are the inspector looks and feels great and the overall clarity of the information displayed is good. Merlin didn't really come alive until v1.3, so I look forward to what this will become over time - hopefully not too much time :)

OK - OK. Now, this clearly says “BETA”, right? So we have to assume it is not fully functional yet, and the Omni Group need our feedback on crashes (I've had a coupl), beach-balling (none so far in BETA 3), and other concerns.

It is interesting to hear general discussions on the convenience and actual utility of GANTT-style planning software, but, hey, this is only an app - if you want to give the Omni Group grief, stick to the actual app, not the planning philosophy.

Having said that, here's my 0.0 €:

- Great interface, very OmniOutliner-like (collapsible Gantt chart, etc.). Great Web export (haven't risked my iCal settings yet, but I'll try it), and a general thumbs-up on look and feel.

Stuff I'd like to see more of:

- Better AddressBook integration (links to the A-book entries?)

- Ditto iCal integration (Synching, like Merlin?). Or at least some kind of calendar pop-up when assigning dates.

That's all I can think of right now - too busy planning a two-week artist residence course in Southern Spain for this coming October.

Best,

Kamen

I'm not sure I understand:  at today's exchange rate, it looks to me like Merlin costs $196.  (While FastTrack Schedule costs $349.)

I've looked at Merlin (and others) in the past and found them complex and unpolished. Downloaded OmniPlan today and set up a up-coming project no problems - much better. I'll be getting a licence!

Minor bug though (I'll submit it tomorrow via the feedback form). If I go back to an item which is all connected etc and add a new resource to it it changes the time line length for that item (seems to be so the software can fit the new name in a lozenge the same size). Also can you allow me to have a half hour lunch please! :)

Great software and LOVE the web export!

Burni—

Tasks are changing length when adding a resource because 2 people can do the work in half the time (theoretically!). If that's not true, lock duration instead of effort on your tasks.

Customize your schedule any way you want (half-hour lunch, 3-day weekend, etc.) in the calendar mode.

And focus specific feedback like this in the forums or to our email addresses—it's easier to remember to address it there.

So what's the price point for all of us Loyal PMX owners?  I have to say $150 for a 1.0 in this arena still seems a bit high, I would think occassionally quantity would account for something, a little less and maybe you can garner more owners.  Who doesn't need some form of project management?

Hi guys,

It looks cool.

I am trying to get applescript to create a task and cannot succeed. Could you help?

(I plan a easy link with Ical and some other stuffs)

Mattao

Looks great, much more intuitive than Merlin1 and handles resources better (though I think resource type should be user definable).

However I get the lovely crash report bomb trying to open visio mpp files that Merlin (v1) does not even flinch at. Interestingly, Merlin2 beta does not like some of these files either.

I will certainly be keeping a close eye on this product through the beta phase

Go to the OmniPlan forum on forums.omnigroup.com for more details on AppleScripting. There's one example up already, and you can ask there if you need something more specific.

Hmmm..

I'm not a serious project software user, but do like to use them for organising my life/work/time.

OP seems to be pretty straightforward, with no issues that have jumped at me - only time will tell how good it is.

I echo one of the other posters in that it might be good to have a demo project or 2 - how about including the one mentioned in the mini-manual ??

Or how about mini-movies, 1 per chapter in the mini-manual ??

Looks good, tho. Even with a higher price [$150, or about £90, I think I'll get a copy].

I was able to check OmniPlan over the weekend. I must say that although there are great features, I can't help but compare it to Merlin 2 (http://www.merlin2.net). For project managers it offers a complete tool and what a lovely app it has become. The price is valid for what it offers.

This is great news for me. I've been waiting for a PM tool from my a software company I can trust. Already a big fan of outliner and graffle. I learned project management the old way, and the only thing I would suggest at the moment as something to think about would be a PERT chat view - you know, those little cards that show the dates in each corner.

Sean mentioned above the idea of OmniPlan as a frontend for the BaseCamp API… I just want to second this - BC changed the way I run my company, do project management, and most importantly enabled me to do more with less.  But in truth it's a bit feature light - to have a great desktop app that could interface with that via the (well documented) API and allow for a little more advanced planning, time tracking and add some intelligence to time/task/milestone mangagement would be “the bomb” so to speak - it would also make this a Killer App on the scale that I feel OmniGraffle is - there are a lot of people using BC these days and a lot of them are on Macs.  A lot of them would want this product if the there a) was integration and b) it was tight

Also, I second the above posters comment - Gantt Chart management is really not the focus of software project management in this day and age.

However OmniPlan looks _great_ aside from what at first glance appears to 'Build a better MSproject' mentality, which was very valuable in Graffle vs. Visio - here however I feel that there is new philosophy to integrate that is changing the way we do things, and Basecamp exemplifies it.

With all that being said, I'm going to give OP a good run through, even though I'm not a Gantt guy anymore.

Oh, and OmniGraffle changed a lot about the way I work a couple of years ago… my eternal thanks for that!
