OmniOutliner 3.9.5 released

by Derek on January 7, 2010

The first Omni release of 2010! No new features here, but if you used OmniOutliner in Chinese you probably noticed that it was showing up in another language! Sorry about that, the Chinese localization was missing in the 3.9.4 release but it's back now!  You can download this version from our site or using the software updater.

If you encounter any problems or have a question, please contact us at omnioutliner@omnigroup.com or by using the Help -> Send Feedback option in the app. Thanks!

Lets be honest. Isn't OmniOutliner being left to die for all intensive purposes?

I know there are “updates” but really there has not been a significant update in a good while. The product has languished while OmniFocus has gotten all the attention. But not all the world wants GTD and I think its fair to say a good general purpose outliner has a lot of utility.

When I first bought the product I loved it. So much that I even purchased an update as well. But, that was done with the expectation in the back of my mind that the product would KEEP improving.

Ideas:

- Plug in Column types (IE our own data-types or at least more than are currently available)

- Easier/Quicker plugin dev. I should not have to learn XCode to develop a simple extension, why not shell scripting (like TextMate) or another mechanism so I can easily offload simple processing of documents.

- Better output formatting. Custom headers and footers anyone? I often want to use this to output a simple bullet point report etc.. but struggle on the presentation details

- Live data links, so I can populate a block of data from another service live into the program (say a finance chart etc)

- Proper/full two-way integration with MS Word (Specifically outline format).

- iPhone app, at least a reader

- Eliminating the pointless duality between ompl and .oo3 format - how does this help anyone? Why should I have to save into a second format in order to get into other apps?

Can you state here if there is going to be substantial updates to the product (LIke 4.x?) or if it will be in a maintenance mode forever? If there is GREAT. I would buy it. But, if not let me know now so I can start to invest my time (which is far more than the cost of the software) in learning another program.

My frustration is not with the software itself. But, with a the non-future of the software.

Are there ever going to be SUBSTANTIAL improvements to this product again. Or is it fix mode and on the way to slow death?

While it probably sounds like a broken record at this point, OmniOutliner 4 is coming and is currently in development. While we can't give any specifics on v4, most of your ideas are ones we've considered. Also, custom headers and footers are already possible with OO3 Pro, it's under Page Setup -> Settings: OmniOutliner Pro -> Headers & Footers tab. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

It does a bit. Considering and releasing are different things. The amount of features and improvements to all your other programs seems to be constant. But OO sits there with few major improvements.

And, why can't you give some specifics? When you developed OmniFocus you released Betas, showed videos of progress etc. There seems to be openness around your other programs. Why not this one.

How about a roadmap? How about an alpha/beta to try?

Again I'm saying this because I like the program but its getting stale compared to things like OmniFocus. But, I don't (and I think there are many like me) want a GTD super computer. I just want a note-taker, outliner, thought organizer.

OO4 will certainly have a beta period, but we're not at that stage right now.

... it would be nice to have a feature where the row color or overall style could be set depending on a value ( list)  in a column. An I could use a function when assigned to a cell/column and creating a new row that generates a unique number that will NOT change when re-organized

While I'm a big Omnigroup fan ( I still use Omnifocus); I've been dismayed at the stalled development of OO4. I use to use it extensively for law school notes and outlines. I was holding out for a full version upgrade, but have had to move onto better, more feature rich programs, with more consistent development.

Two words: word count. I know that an outliner is meant for planning essays, but your software is so easy to use that I end up writing most of the text in it. The thing is that even if I was to write only a first draft using OO I would need to know how many words or characters I have written.

I really hope that this feature makes into OO4, or else I will have no motivation to update.

Please, some kind of syncing functionality between computers and phone.  I've switched to evernote simply because they keep everything straight between my computers and phones and keep a copy saved in the cloud. Heck, even ultra-minimalistic writing app Writeroom from hogbay can be synced online to a web based editor.  Something like this for oo (and why not make it the syncing backbone for all og apps) would make it amazing again (evernote syncing is nice, but text editing/organization Sucks)
