OmniGraffle 4.2 is now available

A long release process, finally done.

This marks the end of development on OmniGraffle 4, provided nothing unexpected occurs with the release of Mac OS X 10.5 (fingers crossed).

The upshot of this is that we're all now working on OmniGraffle 5. And speaking of Leopard, expect to see a public beta of Graffle 5 after the release of Mac OS X 10.5, as it will be required.

A couple of caveats concerning OmniGraffle 4.2 for those who haven't been running the beta releases:

OmniGraffle 4.2 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run

OmniGraffle 4.2 is actually named “OmniGraffle 4” or “OmniGraffle Professional 4” and then localized to hide the number 4 in the Finder. This is done so users of Graffle 2 and Graffle 3 can download and install version 4 without overwriting their existing version of the application

Only change from the release candidate last week was a little icon polish.

Many congratulations on this release.

Are you collecting features? Because here's one I'd like to see implemented: import from AI and eps. Now that you have Bezier curves… shouldn't be too hard… maybe…

I realize that Illustrator targets a different market but there are so many great sites that offer artwork in Illustrator format (iStockPhoto and the like), it would be soooo convenient to import it into a graffle, tweak the colors or remove a poor background, one element of the image, change a text and bing! got a great looking picture for Keynote.

I am a true fanatic of OmniGraffle, it just help me getting better results in less time (how does 1 day compare to 5 days?) than the corporate-recommended (and windows based) Visio.

The only thing is that at the end I have to send a Visio file to my team and clients… I've spotted some issues with the Visio-XML export function:

- Well it does look darn good when opened in Visio…

- ...But as soon as you start cutting and pasting it from Visio to Powerpoint (on any other MS crap) or just touching it, it is just a mess: all perfectly crafted lines path go berserk leaving just the line tags, alone where they were.

Should I log a bug for this one? Will you issue an update for the 4.2?

Just to make sure I understand correctly - OmniGraffle 4.2 will run on OS 10.5, right? You're just emphasizing that there won't be an OmniGraffle 4.3 or beyond and that OmniGraffle 5 will be OS 10.5-only.

Marty- Yes, Graffle 4.2 will run on 10.5.

Benoît - You can already open PDF files and PDF-compatible Illustrator files using OmniGraffle Professional.

Lionel - Your problem rests with Visio having only a few distinct connector types: straight, curved, and orthogonal. When we export, we try to preserve appearance, but overall functionality will trump this.
