OmniFocus for iPhone arrives

by Ethan on July 10, 2008

The Omni Group is proud to announce the birth of a new bouncing baby app: OmniFocus for iPhone. Don't let its size fool you. It may fit in your pocket, but it's got all the same classy and nifty that you get with OmniFocus for Mac. For instance:

  • Full featured as a stand alone iPhone app, or…
  • Sync wirelessly with OmniFocus 1.1 on your Mac (via MobileMe or generic WebDAV)
  • Same powerful management of your projects, contexts and actions
  • Easy access to special lists such as Due Soon, Overdue, and Flagged

We figured that as long as we were building an iPhone app, we should take advantage of some of the neat stuff you can do on the phone. Here are some of the iPhone-only features that are shipping in the application right now:

  • Dynamic location-aware action lists: Let OmniFocus for iPhone put together a list of actions that can be accomplished near to your current location!
  • Photo capture: Save quick snapshots to your OmniFocus inbox. If you're using sync, these will show up in OmniFocus on your Mac.
  • Voice notes: Sometimes it's just faster to record a quick voice note to yourself.

There's more information and links to the App Store on the OmniFocus for iPhone page.  Also, our very own Michaela has put together a great intro video for OmniFocus for iPhone. If you're curious about the application and would like to see more before purchasing, check it out now. It's a 26MB 15MB download so you might want to option-click that link to start it downloading rather than wait for the page to load it in fully.

any chance of a combo discount? I'll need to pick up the desktop app and the iphone app.

photo capture and voice notes, phenomenal!  Already purchased now waiting for apple to open the gate on 2.0.

Sync via WebDAV is cool, but service discovery via Bonjour would be even cooler…. iPhone gets on WiFi at home, it sees the advertisement from the desktop, authenticates (cert, maybe?) that this is a service he wants to sync to, and automatically does so.

Andy

07.10.08 6:37 AM

Andy, we do use Bonjour actually. We use iDisk or WebDAV, but once you have those settings (which in the case of iDisk is literally a one-click operation, and not much more for WebDAV) in your OmniFocus 1.1 for Mac, you can automatically pair with those settings via Bonjour using your iPhone if you are on the same WiFi network as your Mac.

The App store is showing the new iPhone app priced at $19.99. I like what I am hearing, but Omnifocus is already a little pricey for a GTD app. I don't suppose those of us who have purchased the Mac OS X app could get a discount?

Trey

07.10.08 6:49 AM

This is great, the iPhone app I have waited a year for. With the 1.1 sync it iw wall worth the $20 price tag.

Michael

07.10.08 7:11 AM

No bundle-style discount for those of us with OmniFocus already?

Great work, I can't *wait* to give it a spin!  I'll be picking up my first iPhone in the coming days and this will be one of the first (non-free) apps I get!

No bundles any time soon: Apple's online store has no way to verify purchases from our online store and vice versa.

Instead, we tried to price the application very competitively:  I think $19.99 is a very reasonable price for a productivity app, certainly much less expensive than apps in the same space on the BlackBerry or Palm or Windows Mobile platforms. (The average price of the top five best selling BlackBerry To Do applications is over $35.)

Ken Case

07.10.08 8:47 AM

Sounds very cool. But does it work with iPod touch at all?

Morten Lindow

07.10.08 9:00 AM

I already have a purchased copy of OmniFocus for my MacBook, and I have no problem paying $20 for the iPhone version.

I was worried it might be more, once I learned that the iPhone version would be full-featured and able to run without the desktop app. I'll happily pay $20 for the iPhone version.

Morten: Sorry if that wasn't clear! Yes, the iPhone version of OmniFocus also runs on the iPod touch.

Ken Case

07.10.08 10:05 AM

Well done getting such a nice app out on day one.

I think the price is a little high given NetNewsWire, Pandora and Evernote are also feature rich for free.  I understand they are different products/different markets, but the comments show I'm not alone thinking $20 is a little steep.  I'd rather you price according to other App store apps rather than BlackBerry.

Still it looks like a great app, and Things certainly didn't get out the gate as fast as OF.  :)

I'm really happy to see that it will be available on launch day. This is the one app I've really been waiting for. Twenty bucks sounds reasonable to me. Omni has always delivered a high quality product in the past. Now get to work on Omni Outliner!!!

Bob Beerbower

07.10.08 11:57 AM

I cannot wait to take it for a spin. The desktop app is a diamond in the rough and has helped me apply for the first time the GTD methodology electronically. I have almost abondoned the paper chase with the OmniFocus app on the Mac on my MBA. If the software is stable and syncs with the desktop app it will be more than worth it. I am waiting patiently for the v2.0 iphone OSX and the first app I purchase from the App store will be OmniFocus.

Kudos once again to the Omni Group for releasing a fantastic, amazingly polished counterpart to the desktop application. Easily worth the $19.99, IMHO.

Apple's “Back to School” program this year gives students purchasing a laptop or desktop Mac a free iPod Nano or 8GB iPod Touch. You guys need to find those students, tell them to get the free Touch,  and get them hooked up with OmniFocus!

FloatingBones

07.10.08 1:00 PM

Couldn't you have offered a discounted version of iPhone OmniFocus that would have worked after entering your Mac license?

Also, could you please publish a white paper that shows that you can do with a standalone iPhone OmniFocus and then what else is available if you're also using OmniFocus on a Mac?

Thanks.

FloatingBones

07.10.08 1:04 PM

I went looking for WebDav services, or an easy to install OS X WebDav server, but there's not much out there! WebDav is less popular than it was in the late 90s.

Do you have any recommendations for a WebDav server that could run on my OS X workstation? I know it's possible to hack Apache and enable the Apache webdav module, but it's more tricksy than I care for.

John Faughnan

07.10.08 2:00 PM

What the heck…there was never any indication that this would be a standalone, separately-purchased product. I was expecting it to be free, an add-on to make life easier for your existing (and steeply paying) customers. As others have mentioned, EverNote isn't charging for their product (and they didn't already get $70 out of their customers).

You could at least give a $20 credit to the OmniGroup store or something to people who've already purchased the OS X version of OmniFocus.

If you'd said from day one that it'd be $20, I wouldn't have batted an eye, but this comes as a surprise. I've been anticipating a free product for months now, and am disappointed.

Way to stick it to your most loyal customers.

Geektronica

07.10.08 2:04 PM

Hi Ken: Thanks for a great app—I loved using it. I spent some time figuring out how to set up my WebDAV server on Leopard, and figured others might find it useful too.

Manas Tungare

07.10.08 2:15 PM

I agree with geektronica here. Although 20 bucks is very reasonable for the standalone app, I see this as an add-on to the mac app I've already bought and paid for. We should be able to use it within the already purchased licence.

mactiller

07.10.08 5:39 PM

Does the new version of OF mean I can sync my data between TWO MACS?

PiperJ

07.10.08 6:59 PM

Floatingbones: Apple doesn't want applications to require application after purchase; a plan like that would also be a way for developers to circumvent the 30% cut that Apple takes.

Inevitably, there would also be folks that bought the wrong version on the App Store, end up with something they couldn't use, and be unhappy.

Brian

07.10.08 9:07 PM

Any word on when OF 1.1 will be released? I'd like to start using the mobile version now ;-)

Bart

07.11.08 12:00 AM

I'm wondering why you chose to put the Preferences inside the application, instead of into the iPhone's Settings.app, as Apple seems to suggest you should. Any particular reasons for doing this?

LKM

07.11.08 1:22 AM

I've been waiting for a full featured task management program that would synchronize with iPhone and my desktop.  This looks great and I can't wait to give it a try.  I'm not sure why everyone thinks this is outlandishly priced.  If you think the cost outweighs the benefits, don't buy it.  Am I missing something?

James

07.11.08 1:56 AM

Bart: version 1.1 is available here.

LKM - last time I heard one of the developers talk about this, they said Apple's recommendation was “Either in the app or in Settings.app is fine, but don't do both. One or the other.”

Of course, ken may hop on and correct me if I'm wrong. :-)

Brian

07.11.08 3:08 AM

Piperj: Yep, 1.1 is a free upgrade and gives you the ability to sync your data between desktop copies, as well. It's easiest to set up if you have MobileMe, but if you don't, check our OmniFocus for iPhone forums for tips on setting sync up with another WebDAV provider.

Brian

07.11.08 3:14 AM

Geektronica: We didn't intend to disappoint anyone, so I'm really sorry that we did so in your case.

Reviewing everything we've posted over the months (well, most of it, anyway) it looks like we mentioned the not-free on our forums, but I can't find a spot where we did so on the blog. For future products, we'll try to do better.

Mactiller: Similarly, we're really sorry. We have to work within the structure that the App Store provides, and it doesn't support discounting in the way you're looking for.

Brian

07.11.08 3:23 AM

Manas: thanks for writing those instructions! They've been added to the OmniFocus for iPhone F.A.Q. on the forums.

Brian

07.11.08 3:24 AM

@brian: I went back to look it up. In Apple's Mobile HIG, it says:

“Another important facet of the single application model is the way you handle application-specific

preferences. On iPhone OS–based devices, users set preferences in the Settings application. Your

iPhone application can supply such preferences, but this means that they must quit your application

when they want to access them in Settings. If you follow the standard guidelines and offer settings

that users need to set once, and then rarely, if ever, again, the user experience of your application

should be smooth.”

It seems to say that you should put preferences in Settings.app and make sure that users don't need to change them often. Of course, as of now, many applications don't observe this rule, so perhaps I'm misinterpreting Apple's words, or perhaps the guideline is poorly thought out.

I was just wondering about your thought process; why did you decide to keep the prefs in the app?

LKM

07.11.08 6:50 AM

I spent some more time going through the iPhone HIG and found this:

“Among all types of iPhone applications, a productivity application is the most likely to supply preferences, or settings, the user can specify in the Settings application.”

It seems pretty clear that Apple intends for all preferences to be in Settings.app. I haven't yet tried to many apps, so I don't know what percentage of iPhone apps follow this guideline, though.

Settings which appear in the built-in Settings application can't have any code associated with them, they can only use standard controls which store data in a few limited data types.  We wanted to provide the ability to copy synchronization settings from a Mac on your local Wi-Fi network, which involves code—making it impossible to put our settings in the global Settings application.

The above point makes this moot, obviously, but in general another important factor to consider is whether the user might change a setting more than once or whether it's really just a one-time configuration.  If you're talking about something like Mail settings, it's pretty much fire and forget—but in OmniFocus' case, the user might want to quickly switch between looking at all their completed items and then switch back to looking at just their available actions, and they wouldn't want to have to relaunch OmniFocus each time they did this.

(The built-in Settings also gives us a convenient place to put commands to Send Feedback, look up Online Help, and view Release Notes, but that wasn't a primary factor.)

Hope this helps explain our thought process!

I just bought OM for the iPhone and I do not see the same synching preferences panel that appears in the video. I have OM 1.0.3 and it doesn't appear that there any updates. The synch preferences panel I have only gives me the option to synch my calendars with contexts, that's it.

What am I doing wrong? I've been waiting to use OM for the iPhone since I learned it was coming out and now that I have it installed, I'm quite disappointed that it doesn't work “out of the box”...

Hi,  I'm setting up my OmniGroup trial programs and I'm having difficulty syncing my OmniFocus on my mac with the one I've purchased on my iPhone.  I don't really know how to set up “Sync wirelessly with OmniFocus 1.1 on your Mac (via MobileMe or generic WebDAV)”

I would like to be able to just plug my iPhone into my computer and just how so many other applications sync, I want OmniFocus to sync as well.

Is this possible?  I don't want to have to pay $100 for MobileMe/.Mac and I have no idea what a WebDAV is other than what Wikipedia just told me.

Thanks, Harry.

I just bought Omnifocus for the iPhone. But I'm not a Mac user, so I'd like to know if there is a way to 'read', or an API to access, the data stored on the webdav drive. Or do you plan some app for non-Mac platforms?

Thanks,

Juan

Juan

07.12.08 2:54 PM

Brian: Omni Group will get gratuitous dings on the iTunes Store for this product that have nothing at all to do with the quality or performance of the iPhone product.

The App Store pricing model presumes that the iPhone products have no connection with software running on other device. That seems like a flaw.

I don't know if people deserve being thrown a bone for buying your product for multiple platforms, but they do expect it. And I don't quite know a fair and equitable way to throw those bones.

FloatingBones

07.12.08 5:21 PM

Harry: unfortunately, iPhone applications do not have access to wired sync. iTunes does, and it'll back up your data to your computer, but OmniFocus cannot access it. All iPhone apps have this limitation. Your phone and your desktop computer have to communicate over WiFi or the cell network.

Brian

07.12.08 7:48 PM

Juan: I'm not aware of any other applications that read our file format. It's all stored in zip-encoded XML files, so it's theoretically possible, but I don't know how much use that would be to you.

No plans at this time for OmniFocus for non-mac platforms, I'm afraid.

Brian

07.12.08 7:52 PM

Floatingbones: Pretty much agree on all points. We picked the solution that we thought was best. No solution was going to make everyone happy, so you do the best you can, take the lumps that you gotta take, and if the data proves you picked wrong, you adjust and move on at that point…

Brian

07.12.08 8:02 PM

Harry: I should probably clarify a little more. MobileMe is one option, but it's not the only option. Head over to our forums, look at the “Read Me First” post in the OmniFocus Sync forum. It has information on a couple of options that cost less than MobileMe.

Brian

07.12.08 8:05 PM

Geektronica, “way to stick it to your loyal customers?” Wow. Omnigroup exists to make money and they make money by selling software. I think you have your priorities and reality out of whack.

gotta say i agree with geektronica, floatingbones, etc. here.  i'm a (paid, license-holding) user of OF who stopped using it months ago when Things hit the scene.  so in the end, money talks, and that's why i'm not buying the iphone app.  omnigroup circa 2003, i miss your simplicity and bug-free products dearly.  please come back.

Price is fine. Any details on iPod Touch features (i.e. value w/o iPhone).

Jeff

07.13.08 5:18 PM

It's a shame about not being able to do wired sync.  My company's network architecture (Wi-Fi is *outside* our firewall, and requires a VPN to get inside) would make it very hard for me to sync desktop and mobile data via WebDAV.  :-(

Steve Dorner

07.14.08 2:15 AM

OUT - my point is that OmniGroup already made money when I bought OF for Mac. Never were we lead to believe that the iPhone app would need to be purchased separately.

Here's how you could have made OF for iPhone free for existing customers: make two versions - one standalone, one that syncs with OF desktop. Both could have the exact same features and sync with MobileMe for backup and such; the only thing you'd have to do is disable the “create a new database” feature in the iPhone version for those of us who already bought OF desktop, so the only way to use it would be to synch from the desktop version using an existing database.

If it's a great app in its own right, I don't have a problem with selling it for $20 in the ITAS, but this wasn't what I expected. In the announcement post, the question of pricing was raised but never answered.

Having complained about that, I gladly shelled out $20 for OmniFocus for iPhone.

Geektronica

07.14.08 7:57 AM

Geektronica, Never is a poor choice of words.

NeverSayNever

07.14.08 9:39 PM

I am a new user, seems good so far.

Improvements would be:

1. When I have an action, and I want to now link it to a project, the keyboard pops up, blocking most of the screen, making it difficult to select from my already established project names. It SHOULD NOT pop up unless i tap in the top text entry area, as in every other iphone application.

2.It would be nice if actions to phone someone could somehow be linked to the address book, so the full name could pop up quicker as I enter it, or I could dial from your list of names.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve

the easy way to deal with all of these price complainers is to slightly lower the price of the desktop app.  Most everyone who likes the product is going to be buying the iphone app.

Steve

07.15.08 1:15 AM

I suggest lowering the price of the desktop app, on the assumption that most of your users will be buying the iphone app.

Steve

2 comments, 1 question:

1. Beautiful app, very well done.

2. Amazed at the number of people whining about payment. Do you want a developer to make nice, stable products and then actually be around in 10 years still developing and supporting them? Then understand they need to make a profit. The cost of these products is not cheap but also not unreasonable compared to the market. And if you don’t what to pay, go use something else, but for God’s sake, stop freaking whining like little children.

3. Any plans to include Perspectives functionality? This is the one thing I'm most missing.

Rick

Rick, I know perspectives on the phone is one of the more popular requests in our feature request database. Popular requests are more likely to make it in sooner, but I don't know anything specific.

Pricing: For me OF is one of the most important apps on my mac(s) - therefore the price is perfectly all right for me!

Keep in mind: OF is a well-supported product, not some lousy shareware.

Imho the OF guys well deserve the money…

Don't listen to the 'I think $19.99 is a little steep' crowd.

I paid for Omnifocus (a family license) and I *happily* paid for the iPhone version. Your program has many times over made back the money I paid in time and productivity.

Charge for your work! Charge well, charge fairly and most importantly, *make more*.

Oh - and make the start up on the iPhone a bit quicker (or provide a fast entry sub-app).

I just purchased Omnifocus for my iPhone but don't have a mac to sync it with. Are you planning on designing a desktop application for Windows Vista?

Hilda Guerrero

07.22.08 5:23 PM

I think the point that us “whiners” are trying to make is that it would have been nice if the iPhone was considered a device under the family license. We own family packs of both OmniFocus and OmniWeb, and we were happy to pay for both of them, but this quite frankly feels like a slap in the face.  Especially when one looks at the developers of 1Password, who made their app free for a short time so their *loyal customers* could get it. I'm not saying OmniFocus for iPhone should be free, but I most certainly do think the iPhone should be included as a device in a family pack license.  And the fact that is isn't has left a bad taste in this customer's mouth.  If that's whining, then so be it.

Carol

07.23.08 3:07 AM

@neversaynever - I said it wasn't mentioned in the comments or post announcing the product, not the forums. Ken has already explained that price was discussed in the forums, which I did not read prior to the launch.

Aaaanyway, I'm liking OF for iPhone so far (the latest update solved the crashing problem), but still finding the load time a bit much.

I'm confident, though, that things will only get better with each new update. Keep up the good work!

@Carol - I agree - it should certainly be included in the family pack license.

Geektronica

the problem with the app store is no preview or refunds. So if I'm scanning comments here, a bit concerned, and want to try I'm spending 20.00 regardless. That's my issue and something OO can't help me with.

Ok,

I just synced desktop > laptop > iPhone and back. That's worth $19.00 alone. If there's another app that does that, I don't know what and presume it's not free.

Also,

While the gtd connection is there, I don't use OF for that at all.  It's a thought collector/distributor for me and running my business.  Find an interesting URL, send it to OF with OSX services. An email to act on, same thing. The marketing of OF as a GTD app, sure, but there's a lot more it does and can do; especially with a shared, synced DB.

DL Byron

07.25.08 3:59 PM

My first time using omnifocus - just bought it for my iphone, as task management is essential to me, and I’ve been waiting for a decent iphone app to come along.

It looks very good, but two things are missing for me….

1) Omnifocus needs to synch/integrate with my Windows Outlook

2) The ability to add Start and Due dates and add a Time reminder seems useless unless it also gives an audible/visual alert (like a calender appointment does) - this is important!

Keep up the good work….

Jeremy

07.25.08 8:49 PM

ok, check this out ... in near real time, I sent emails from my iPhone to my desktop (with a—in the subject line), that trigged a script for OF to grab the email and make it into an action. Next time I loaded OF on my iPhone, the email/action was there waiting for me. Nice.

I am a paid user of OmniFocus for the Mac, and added OmniFocus for the iPhone shortly after the app store launched.

I had been using OmniFocus on only a basic level, not really getting the most out of it. But adding the iPhone to the mix has tied everything together, and now I'm getting much, much more out of the software on both devices.

To me, the $20 price of the iPhone app is a hell of a deal. I'd have paid $30 without question and $40 without complaint.

My only suggestion to the iPhone version at this point was mentioned by Steve on July 15th:

“1. When I have an action, and I want to now link it to a project, the keyboard pops up, blocking most of the screen, making it difficult to select from my already established project names. It SHOULD NOT pop up unless i tap in the top text entry area, as in every other iphone application.”

But that is a minor concern, and everything in the app feels rock solid and works great for me!

11.18.08 12:51 PM

Hello,

Long time user, first time poster.  I just want to thank you.  I use Omni apps a lot, and have been using Omnifocus for the iPhone and mac since August.

The price is quite reasonable, and if you do not think so, hook yourself up with a cheaper or free GTD app that does not have the same R and D backbone.  Omnifocus is not merely a gtd, you can also use it as a portable omni outliner (I do this a lot).  Toss your outline in as a new project, and it is all there.  Once on your home machine, copy and paste into outliner.  I think you can also go the other way but it will give you a pop-up about remapping.  Once you okay it, you are home free.  I use it to track quotes I am going to use in class (I am a teacher).

P.S.  The website is that of my Band TM.

Anyway, Thank you thank you.  It works well.  And is well worth it.  This was my first of four omni apps and I am quite pleased.
