OmniFocus 1.1 sneaky peek available

by Linda Sharps on July 11, 2008

Hey, sneaky peek fans! Hot off the servers, get an early look at OmniFocus 1.1 here. OmniFocus 1.1 adds support for synchronizing between computers and with OmniFocus for iPhone and iPod touch.

The sneaky peek page allows you to grab all of our most recent alpha builds for this release, and if you'd like to give it a try we recommend you update to a new build on a fairly frequent basis—and don't forget to turn on frequent backups in your OmniFocus preferences, Just In Case.

Enjoy!

Thanks, it's totally awesome!  OF for iPhone is one of the greatest technological developments in the history of the universe.  Together with perfectly normal OF, I am having a transcendent productivity experience.

I've been using the Sneaky Peek all this week, and it's been great. I love being able to sync my desktop and laptop. Installed OF for iPhone earlier today, and completely agree with Daniel. Thanks, Omni!

FYI,

The last two release notes on the sneaky peak say JUNE in stead of JULY.

The iPhone app is looking good, and the syncing looks like it will work great.

Unfortunately, I have to be the one to inform you that you will also need a web app to make OmniFocus truly ubiquitous.

I want to eat, drink, sleep, and breathe omni, but my work requires me to use a PC.  Sad but true.  And Apple has left tasks out of MobileMe.  It's a big opportunity for you to offer something missing from the Apple suite.

Thanks for your consideration!

I completely agree with IMATT, OmniFocus will be really complete with a WebApp accessible anytime from any OS/platform/device.

As a new OmniFocus user, and non-Mac user, I'd be really happy to manage the data on the WebDav through any web browser.

Thanks,

Juan

I'd love to see OmniFocus give us a one click app that would active the WebDav support of OS X workstation Apache.

That's not my greatest need though. I can always pay for mobile.me while I wait for OS X share support or SMB share support.

My greatest need is a way to import my Outlook/tab delimited/CSV delimited/Palm (any one would work) tasks into OmniFocus.

I can't start using OF until this is available.

Maybe you could pay an outsider to develop an AppleScript solution? There are a lot of Palm users who want to move to the iPhone and OmniFocus, and tasks are a major issue.

John Gordon: We're working on adding direct support for importing CSV documents, but in the meantime here are two possible options:

If you're able to synchronize your existing task list to iCal (which I know you can do with Palm tasks using MissingSync), you can synchronize it from iCal to OmniFocus and get it into your list that way.

Alternatively, you could use OmniOutliner (which has a free trial license) to import CSV into an OmniOutliner document, and you can then import that OmniOutliner document into OmniFocus.

Hope this helps!

Absolutely agree on the web app as the missing ingredient.  There are so many cool GTD web apps out there now (Remember the Milk, Vitalist, etc.), and I've tried them all, but non are as cool and functional as OmniFocus, and I've only been using OF for a day.  However, like most of the world, I have to use a PC at work, and to be able to quickly log in and access my OmniLife would be a total solution for so many people.  Not to diminish the work on the iPhone—that app was truly a breakthrough and sets a new standard for productivity on the iPhone.  But there are a lot more people in the world who don't have an iPhone OR a Mac, and targeting both PC users and multi-platform users with a web app would really explode your user base.

Boy, we customers are a demanding lot, aren't we!  :)

I'm going to throw my support behind a webapp as well.  In addition to adding support for PCs, I think it would also help with some of the syncing issues.  At present, I'm still having a of trouble getting my home computer, work computer, and iphone to stay in sync.

Even better, it would be great if the desktop version of omnifocus was really just a front end for the data that is stored in the cloud, so that there is only 1 copy of the database at all time, and no syncing would be required.

I would like to see WiFi sync for the iPhone.  I don't require “in the cloud” webdav or mobileme sync, i just want to be able to sync with my iMac at home

I've been using OmniFocus for several months now, and the only reason I'm still looking around for other solutions (but not really finding them…) is that I have to use a PC at work, and it's too much of a hassle to take my iBook to work everyday just to have OmniFocus access. A webapplication in combination with the current application on my iMac or iBook for at home or on the road would be the perfect solution for me!

Oh yes, I do need a wifi sync. I've been using .Mac for years but I'm tossing Mobile Me because it doesn't give such an improvement. But then, I'm loosing OF syncing. Wifi, please…

Actually, a sync over the cable, throught iTune would also be OK. I mean, that would centralize the syncing. Thanks.

It would be nice if the iPhone version allowed self-signed SSL certificates for the WebDav share.  Currently it displays a message, “untrusted server certificate”, then the import quits.  I don't want to have to pay a yearly fee for a 3rd party SSL signature just to sync my phone, and I'd rather not send everything in the clear…

Please, remove an SSL request from WebDav disk!!

This is ridiculous—-the syncing with the laptop version overwrote my iPhone database, and I can't recover it.  Terrible programming, thanks guys, for nothing.

Owen: I'm sorry to hear that happened; that's definitely not the case for most people!  Please provide more details to our tech support team, so we can try to figure out what happened.  Your data might still be fully recoverable, either from an iPhone backup or from the sync database on the server (which keeps change logs).
