I Like Coffee

by Joel on June 27, 2006

Man, do I like coffee—it's total go-juice, like it's like airplane fuel for grown-ups, nothing gets me up and running like a piping hot cup o' joe, and I don't go for that whole latte/mocha/whatever-o-chino that the hoity-toity coffeeshops sell, I just like a good strong cuppa joe (preferably percolated) with maybe even a shot of espresso dropped in it, like it was some sort of coffee boilermaker, man, that would be so totally awesome that all the tea in China would have to bow down before it and energy drinks would hang their heads in shame, I don't even like to put sugar or creamer in my coffee but James showed me this trick where just a little unrefined sugar in an americano can make it taste exactly like really good drip, and that makes me wonder, how can espresso be so darn fast, even if you use a french press you have to wait for the coffee to steep but if you're using an espresso machine it's practically instant without tasting like yucky instant coffee, I gotta figure out how that all works out and then make a miniature version and patent it and I'll be super-rich, or maybe I could sell the idea or we could make some really cool app for controlling coffee makers over the internet, anyways I gotta go now, need to make another cup of coffee.

As I'm reading this (w/ my coffee), I am looking for more hints of this upcoming, gotta-have it product.  I'm dying here without new info to speculate on.

You have one guaranteed sale if this new thing is anyway related to task/ PM software.

Oh my! Too much coffee leads to a gigantic single run-on sentence post!

Indeed, 235 words in one sentence. @_@

Your “coffee boilermaker” exists… around here it's called a Redeye.  French dark roast + a shot (single or double) of espresso.  I've had it; it does more harm than good!  :D

A bag of Kona coffee for expresso.

Fill a glass with ice and water. Let it sit for a minutes or too until it gets very cold.

Meanwhile place 3oz of milk in a pan and set it to a low flame.

Fill the water to the small side valve.

Pack the coffee into the reservoir.

Seal and set it on a medium flame.

Put 2 tsp of sugar is a bottom rounded coffee cup.

Once the first teaspoon of coffee comes up (looks like mud) pour it into the coffee cup and place it back on the flame. Use a teaspoon and blend in the bit of coffee with the sugar. It will turn to a light brown syrup. When the coffee is done pour it into the cup and slowly mix it in. You should have a layer of coffee froth at the top. Now just wait for the milk to froth up and pour it into your coffee.

This is a Cuban “cortadito” but the addition of the pricey Kona coffee makes is smooth!

At home I keep a bag of Kona (for me and my wife) and a can of Bustello for my guest.

Bro, the reason that espresso has that amazing flavor in a short amount of time comes from the way it's brewed(duh!). The water for espresso comes out of the machine as steam. The water in the vapor phase causes a much more rapid extraction of the chemicals in the beans which make that awesome brew. All other coffees are brewed with liquid water. This was one of the key topics in my thermodynaics class. Hope that helps with the new invention!

Matthew is wrong.  Espresso is not made from steam.  Espresso made from steam would be terrible and burnt.

Water at high temperatures and under high pressure (about 200 F and nine atmospheres) extracts a lot of flavor in a very short amount of time.  Hence, the deliciousness that is espress.

By the way, if you want to try something fun, look out for the Aeropress.  It's like a cross between french press and espresso, easy to use and great for making awesome coffee at work.
