Happy birthday, OmniGraffle!

by Joel on May 7, 2007

OmniGraffle 1.0 was released on May 7, 2001. I guess that makes it 6 years old today (that's 42 to you and me).

A couple of nice folks wrote in with great praise today (not really birthday greetings, but I'm gonna use them here anyways) for Graffle, so here they be…

OmniGraffle user J.C. writes:

What awesomely cool software. I am a first-time user and couldn't be more pleased with a software title than I am with OmniGraffle Pro. It isn't often that software just REALLY kicks butt on all fronts.

And J-A. B. chimes in with:

I just wanted to say I really love your Omnigraffle software (and I have only been using it 1 week)...It's great! I love it. I can do everything I used to do in showcase (and more!), which is fabulous.

There's no Amazon wishlist for OmniGraffle that I know of, but I was just having a discussion with Graffle about its somewhat rebellious behavior and as a six-year-old, it said it really really REALLY wanted a pony.

[Late update]: Today is also Support/QA manager Brian's birthday as well. Pie!!

Naaah, I think it wants some Focus in its life.  :-)

Sorry.  Had to.  Love Graffle, swear by it, use it as a teacher all the stinkin' time.  I'm very grateful for software that makes it that easy to look that good!

Here's to 42 more!

Yes, I used it to layout the overall structure of one of our degree programs last week and had several staff say 'what software did this..?'

I only thought 'and if you'd only seen it actually working'.

I always think of OGP as one of the most unique productivity tools I possess.  It enables a certain kind of thought and communication.  It's cool.

I've laid out brainstorms galore, workflows and the entire workings of our new house, from floor plans to electical placements, heating, furniture, fixtures and fittings each on it's own layer.

I love it.

Congratulations,

I'm using OmniGraffle for several years now and I can't imagine a world without. It makes illustrating things so much easier and fun.

Keep up the great work

My friends and colleagues are shocked and amazed at what I can do with OmniGraffle.  Thanks for making such a kickass product.  I use it every day to wireframe and design and sitemap like a user experience ninja.

Congrats on an unusually long lifespan for a product, relative to the usual length of time a software title hangs around. I didn't realize OmniGraffle was that old.

I'm a college math professor and I purchased OmniGraffle because I'm working on a curriculum project and needed to create a diagram for coursework within a degree program. But I really ended up using it the most in my classes, where I used it to create concept maps and graphical versions of my lecture notes. Here's an example from a linear algebra class:

Students have really appreciated the diagrams—I think having a high-quality visual aid really helps them learn the material (and remember it) better.

My co-workers sniffle at the Graffle for just being “just a copy of Visio for Mac”—except that OG makes MUCH better looking documents.

Now, about that Visio Binary support…

OmniGraffle Pro was one of the most versatile software I've ever used. I not only do charting/graph/diagrams with it, I've also done floorplan drawing with it! The results looked so good, the architect thought it was professionally drawn!

Happy Birthday OmniGraffle! I've been a regular user since version 2, and have long considered it to be one of the best applications on the platform. I've used it for everything from producing network diagrams for work (I'm a systems admin) through to using it to re-design our kitchen!

Every now and then someone at work tries to get me to use Visio or SmartDraw on Windows. I open my powerbook and show 'em Omnigraffle. So far I've converted three users to Mac on the strength of this app alone….. lol

Awesome software guys (and I don't mean only 'Graffle). Keep up the good work!
