Ethan Schoonover's second OmniFocus screencast

by Ken Case on May 15, 2007

Ethan Schoonover has relaunched his Kinkless website, and has posted a second screencast about OmniFocus:

OmniGroup has let Schrödinger's cat out of the bag and put doubts to rest as to whether it exists or not… it definitely exists. With the beta rolling out slowly but surely, I thought it was a good time to release another video showing you some other neat stuff you can do with OmniFocus.

Click below to watch a ten minute video that talks a bit about sub-projects, nesting sequential sub-projects inside parallel parent projects and even briefly demo's how to change styles.

If you're enjoying Ethan's screencasts, be sure to drop him a comment on his site and let him know!  (I know that people here at Omni have been learning new things from watching them.  Thanks again, Ethan!)

For those who are wondering whether or not they've already been sent an invitation and it's just slow in arriving:  the first batch of 100 invitations went out about eleven hours ago, which means that anyone who confirmed their subscription to the OmniFocus beta mailing list before 2am (Pacific) on October 31 should have received it by now.  100 down, 4,100 to go.  Or, um, that's what it was eleven hours ago—it appears we now have 4,874 subscribers, so make that 4,774 to go.  Or, uh, 4,893?  Or…

Hmm, maybe we'd better send out another batch soon.  (Another 100 will bring us up to anyone who confirmed their subscription before 3pm on November 1.  Whew, it's nice to be able to report something about this mailing list that doesn't change every five seconds.)

Oh, this will be agonizing! I have beta testing experience; I backup every day to multiple drives; I'm still using KinklessGTD since it's the closest thing to OmniFocus from what I see; and yet it looks like I won't be getting my beta for weeks (months?) because I didn't hear about the beta email list until Feb 28th (by my records). ARGH!

Hi all,

We've published an interview with Ken Case, founder of Omni Group, on insideTonic. The folks at Omni Group have also provided us with 6 licenses for Omni products, which we're giving away to readers.

That will teach me to procrastinate on signing up for the mailing list!  I heard about it earlier but did not sign up until late February -  now I must suffer with much rending of garments and gnashing of teeth…

Given that this is a (semi-) public beta, how do the OmniFolks feel about people redistributing their copy?

I have two coworkers who are on the beta mailing list, and we figure that whoever gets the first email will give the other two a copy. Hopefully that would be okay

But what if someone put a copy on their website? Or on BitTorrent? (I'm not saying I want to do that, but it might take some load off of your servers…)

We really don't want you to redistribute. Each person will receive their own individual password. We're limiting the number of people in this sneaky peek for a reason, so please, don't share your password. If you post your password, we'll de-activate it.

All the best beta testers signed up before November 2, 3:11 pm central time. You can trust me on this.  The rest of the folks will thank you if you leave them off the beta until the Nov 2 crowd sorts out all the problems. Did I mention NOV 2?

Fair enough.

I thought I'd ask, because I'm we're all anxious to get our hands on it, and I'm sure I'm not the only person who's got a long wait. I signed up in April… :(

So far things are going really well and we hope to add people fairly quickly. Thanks for the patience!

I didn't have signing up to the list on my to do list until February! :-(

Thanks for getting the alpha out the door, even if it's not entering mine (yet).

I also (sigh) only signed up for the beta list a couple of weeks ago, so will be sitting on my hands impatiently.  But on behalf of all of us who've dealt with a “beta” version released to the world 5” after the coding was finished, thanks for your care with beta testing!

I've seen both screencasts; wondering what kind of sharing features there might be, or perhaps that's one for version 2.0. Networkable shareable projects with some form of user-action assignment (like: user A decides he's going to pick up everything the group needs at office depot) could be a better solution for some small workgroups (or families for that matter) than full fledged project mgmt software. I know my wife and I don't really need to draw out gantt charts! However if we had a common list of all things long term and short term it would be something

Sorry to bother, but I feel left out… signed on Oct 31st and no invitation yet. Feels like christmas without presents. Sniff..

Hayssam (and a few others): We did have some missing data in our logs of “who signed up when” but we've gone through, found those people and sent them invites this afternoon (or so I'm told). If you haven't received an invite yet, and you are sure (not just wishing!) you signed up early (I think we're up to January now), send us an email (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) and we'll double-check.

Any chance you can give us a schedule for when you might be sending emails to those of us who join… oh, to pick a date at random… three weeks ago? Please? Just a hint? It'll make waiting less painful if we know how long we have to wait.

We continue to add people, but if you joined in the last month, you probably have a few weeks to wait. Thanks for your patience!

I think you should add priority to those of us who own multiple Omni products (Graffle Pro & Outliner Pro here) Soon to be OmniFocus if I ever get a Beta.

Now that the commercial element has crept in, how about auctioning off a few invites on eBay ;-)

Sincerely, though, this making-people-wait-ploy is a brilliant marketing scheme. Congratulations! (Honestly!)

Hate to be a grammar-dweeb, but apostrophes are not signals that an 's' is coming:

“... even briefly demo’s how to change styles.”

As a grammar dweeb myself, I took that apostrophe as a signal that he was abbreviating the word “demonstrates.”

This is looking great.  Couple of things I'd really like to see, but that are not pure-GTD.

I'm using OmniOutliner for GTD at the moment.

1. When I check something off I like to drag it to an 'archive' section.  I'd love an option to keep a (e.g. spotlight) searchable history of completed tasks.  I don't use it much, but I sleep easier knowing I can go back and look if I have to.

2. I used to track events on a custom event tracker web page that I created that gives you how many months, weeks, days until the due date of each task (filterable by project).  I still miss being able to order things by when they're due or seeing roughly how far away it is.  I write a due date into items in my 'tickler' category.

3. Related to the above it'd be handy to track the time since the event was added for certain projects or events too.  Similar to the above this is just another factor I'd like to be able to take into account when prioritorising next actions.  Maybe even put in 'remind me' type tickles/alerts (a la stikkit.com, remind me ).

Thoughts?  Good luck with the project.
